Mangaluru: Huge retaining walls built in city reduce to artificial floods

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Jul 12: The residents of the city, who were living near stormwater drains, have gotten relief in most of the areas in the city from artificial floods which used to occur during monsoons.

The small irrigation department has built huge retaining walls at a cost of Rs 65 crore which prevented flooding in many areas.

In many areas in the city, the residents had to shift to other places and lose their valuable household goods due to flooding. Now this problem is solved forever. Though it rained for a week continuously in the city, the areas where retaining walls were built near the huge storm water drain, flooding did not occur.

MLA Vedavyas Kamath had made a special appeal to the state government in this regard and a Rs 65 crore grant was released. The retaining walls were built during summer itself. The work is in progress in some other areas also.

A resident of Jeppinamogaru said that every year they were facing an artificial flood problem. But this year it was resolved as the retainer wall was built. The same opinion was echoed by the residents of Hoigebailu.

How about tackling sea erosion. The sea erosion is being compounded by theft of sand from the beach. This sand is being used in construction of various civic projects as well as by individuals. A child can tell you that beach sand is unstable and should not be used for construction. Is it any wonder then that our government built retaining walls collapse( Airport ro ad)?

Retaining walls works as dams and during rains they bursts and create floods.

Good work needs to be appreciated . When the previous regime was functioning ,there was only potholes. every where ..Now at least there are good roads and pavements. The pumpwell fly over got operational under nalinkumar kateel .. and many other projects are in progress which has active involvement of local elected representatives like Vedvyas kamath,Bharath Shetty,Nalin Kumar Kateel,Harish punja ,Mr Poojary etc .The look of Hampankatta junction is completely changed under smart city project ,but people only know to criticize with a blind hate ..

The only difference is that the previous roads took at least 3 years to display potholes, but present roadworks don't even last one year. Result of value incorporated sans 40%

Great forethought and execution.......critics please remember we had record rain in last ten days but not much flooding except on 30 th July...which was primarily due to citizens throwing plastic trash and of course authorities not clearing drains on time. Give credit were it is due👍

S.G., Please drive towards Mangalore Airport and have a look at the retaining wall along the road expansion near Sridevi College and the retention wall built to hold the cut down part of the hill from collapsing. Collapsing has already begun, we got to keep watching the future fury of the nature. Same goes to the retention wall opposite Anthony Katte. Such scenes aren't a repercussion of one day's rain, it is begged for by human actions. Critics do have work, they don't crib unnecessarily. Our taxes are being washed down in floods by these 40% politicians. Nevertheless those who shout 'Jai.. Jai..' nothing is visible.

Please dont blame citizens. Citizens throw because there is no one moving around their areas to collect garbage on a day to day basis inspite of including the charges on waste collection when we pay the taxes. What people can do. Garbage bins have been removed. People cannot keep the garbage inside the house for weeks altogether. One week before there was a strike from the employees who collect the garbage for many days. One side rain....cannot burn since it is affecting our environment....cannot dump inside as well as outside. Tell me s.g. whose fault ? Who has to bear inspite of paying yearly house taxes. So, critics have full right to write when such things are not taken care of...Even our MCC least bothered to educate our people nor interested to clean the drainages every quarterly. Where this money goes which alloted for maintaining purposes ?? ( Please note i never throw garbage outside during their strikes. I somehow manage till their arrival) But, all cannot manage due to various reasons...
