Bengaluru: Heavy rains in ghat sections – Four main roads pose danger to commuters

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, Jul 11: Landslides have occurred on four main ghat sections roads that connect the coastal region to the plains of Karnataka.

Traffic is completely stalled on Agumbe ghat which is a national highway that connects Shivamogga with Udupi. Hill collapses have occurred on Shiradi Ghat stretch that lies on NH 75 and Sampaje Ghat on Mani-Mysuru NH 275.

A tree has fallen on Villupura-Mangaluru NH 73 Charmadi ghat which is an alternative route to Shiradi Ghat.

A hill collapsed on the morning of Sunday on the 4th and 10th bends of Agumbe Ghat. Traffic is prohibited on this route now. JCB machines are being used to clear the heap of mud. As Agumbe ghat is closed, all vehicles are passing through Mala Ghat which has caused a traffic congestion. On this ghat also minor hill collapses have been reported.

A landslide occurred at Donigal of Shiradi Ghat. Last year also a landslide occurred at the same spot and vehicular movement was stopped for one month. The National Highway Authority is placing sandbags on the collapsed area to prevent further collapse.

A wall collapsed again near Monnangeri of Madikeri on the Madikeri-Mangaluru national highway. A tree fell on the 8th bend of Charmadi Ghat on Sunday morning and traffic was affected for one hour.

As vehicular movement is prohibited on Agumbe ghat, motorists are plying by two alternative routes. In order to reach Udupi, Karkala and Hebri, commuters have to use Theerthahalli-Eduru Mastikatte-Hulikal ghat-Hosangadi-Siddapura-Halady route. From Sringeri, commuters can use the Nemmar Kerekatte-S K Border-Malaghat route to reach Udupi and Karkala.

I passed yesterday through Donigal and was pleasantly surprised to find cement mixers, sand bags and umpteen staff. Really salute them that they are ensuring smooth traffic within the limitations that is possible under heavy rain. Most importantly, machinery ensuring that traffic is not affected in the Gundya-Mangalore section, when it is literally pouring is commendable, especially those who are on ground and doing this.

Some of the issues are caused by environmentalists, forest department and of course, poor planning. The current ghat roads do not have adequate asphalted or concrete shoulder space, no centerline strip even on a 2 lane roads not to mention, strong retention walls with modern techniques needs to be built throughout the ghat section. To build a proper 2 lane ghat section road, at least 40 feet clear space is needed (30 feet for asphalted or concrete road + 5 feet additional space on each side of the road for drainage system so that water does not overflow on the streets or cause flooding). On steep curve sections, the road width may have much more than 40 feet which may even require adding concrete pillars to extend the curve. A 4 lane narrow divided median will require a minimum of 60 feet space. Also, on the ghat section, on 2 lane roads, suggest to have rumble strips to maintain lane discipline. Sure, well planned and implemented ghat roads will require funds, good contractors who are well trained to build such roads and a strong will from administration officials to build a trouble-free ghat road network.

All roads are in a mess in KarNataka due to unscientific cutting of hills and not constructing retainer walls or installing wall ropes in vulnerable areas!

Contracts are awarded to inexperienced and petty contractors who are ready to pay the demanded cut and do a sloppy job, which is visible now! To build roads on hilly terrain we require technically sound and experienced contractors like L&T, etc!!
