Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru/Udupi

Mangaluru/Udupi, Jul 6: As a red alert is issued by the India Meteorological Department for the district, Dakshina Kannada (DK) deputy commissioner (DC) Dr K V Rajendra and Udupi DC Kurma Rao M declared a holiday on Thursday July 7 for all the educational institutions.

It may be recalled, a holiday was declared on July 5 and 6 also as heavy rains lashed the twin districts. All the private and government schools, colleges and degree colleges will remain close on July 7.

Udupi DC also declared a holiday for all schools and colleges on July 7 due to heavy rainfall which is expected to hit the district.

An orange alert is also issued by the meteorological department on July 8 and 9 in the twin districts.

How I wished the Deputy Commissioner, Dr. K.V. Rajendra and Udupi DC Mr Kumar Rao M took a walk when it is not raining to find out why there are no proper drainage systems or why the drains do not function and instead is causing water flooding from the areas Bannanje downwards. Monsoons is not new in this coastal area town in fact in these years it is poor and erratic. Problem is all those people in authority get up only now and are not involved in town planning like MLA Bhat threatening the Highway Authority of India. Every year, at this time, he and others issue threats!I wish his bark had some teeth. Then Udupi district and town would have had good and well engineered infrastructure. Every year our politicians simply bark but still award the same contractors who are bad by any yard stick.

If heavy rains are not expected during peak of monsoon season, then when?? Declaration of holidays based on unreliable predictions is totally unwarranted! Authorities have to accept that artificial flooding which has increased over the years is due to poor infrastructure, deforestation, and concretization which is now almost irreversible!!

Our farmer here say, today is the last day for the name of this nakshatra. Today onwards another nakshatra began. This first day of new nakshatra arrived in a heavy downpour..... God's wish.... He knows everything.... May god save everyone....Wells and all are over flowing... People say. Every year, rain is same. Simply to say this year more. Problems only because of insufficient drainage to flow the water smoothly.... People please do take care.....

Sanjay, in developed countries floods are occurring because of extreme climate change wherein unexpected typhoons, cyclones, and cloud bursts are occurring on a regular basis whereas in India the situation is mostly man-made!!
