Udupi, Jul 5: Several roads in the district are flooded due to incessant rain during the last two days. People living near the sea shore are anxious. Rain water has filled in the fields in low lying areas.

Holidays have been declared for schools and colleges. Rain water at Muloor and Kallianpur reached above sea level. There is fear of floods if the rain continues.

Road on both of the sides of NH66 at Karavali junction is inundated. Vehicle drivers and pedestrians are struggling to cross the road. The water in Uppoor river has crossed the danger mark and people on the banks of the river have expressed fear.

Artificial floods are created due to lack of drainage facilities at some of the low areas such as Udupi, Doddanagudde, Manipal, Peram, Parkala and Malpe.

Some of the houses at Moodanidambur of Udupi Bannaje are surrounded by water as it has filled on the roads. Municipal council officers visited the spots and took safety measures.

Ever since illogical development and unscientific engineering was applied in Udupi town, flooding is an annual phenomenon. Any fool can tell why water is collecting at the Adi Udupi by pass except those foolish uneducated local politicians and those sitting as authority in the Udupi Municipality. There is no drainage system or there the highways that are higher than the surrounding areas so it will naturally flood. Which foolish local cannot see this deficieny or does not understand this.? It is high time the local people stop the PWD and the Municipality when such irresponsible works are being carried out. If not just suffer and bear the inconvenience. I once asked the contractor who built the four lane highway from Adi Udupi to Manipal, why is the road being built at such a high elevation, and why is there no provision for drainage and walkways. He told me we have been awarded a contract to do the road works and we are executing according to their plans and design, that has no drainage nor pavements foreseen in our plans, perhaps after five years another phase with those works will be contracted and executed. And he was right! This is how our Town Planners and the PWD and The Udupi Municipality work. All the pavements that were built thereafter have MESCOM concrete poles in the center! What logic is that? These Authorities do not ever walk so they dont see. Its like the Police, we act when we get a complaint!
