Puttur, Jun 4: A 28-year-old man was brutally hacked to death at Perlambady of Bellare, in Sullia taluk here on Saturday June 4.

The deceased is identified as Charan Raj, a resident of Aryapu.

He was one of the accused in the murder of Hindu activist Karthik Suvarna Merla.

Charan's father-in-law Kittanna Rai was planning to open a drug store in a complex at Melina Pete of Perlampady. The medical store was supposed to get inaugurated on Sunday. Charan along with his friend, complainant Naveen Kumar of Tharigudde in Chikkamudnur village used to often visit Perlampady for the shop related works.

Accused Kishore Poojari and slain Charan Raj

On June 4 at 4.30 PM, when the work was in progress in the medical shop, Charan Raj was speaking over his mobile phone outside, when the three accused reportedly came on two bikes and brutally attacked Charan with machetes. Hearing Charan screaming when his Naveen Kumar rushed outside the shop. When he saw Charan on the ground being assaulted by the trio with weapons, Naveen rushed towards him. However, one Kishan Poojary of Kalladka from the gang, known to Naveen stopped him by telling him, "Hope you remember what happened the other day. How do you expect us to spare him?"

Following a brutal attack with long knives, machetes and iron rods, Charan was severely injured in the neck and head, he bled to death on the spot.

It may be recalled that on the night of September 4, 2019 at 10 pm, Karthik Merla was brutally hacked to death in front of Sampya police station and Kiran, Charan and Preetesh of Mangaluru were arrested. Charan and Kiran were released on bail two years ago.

Naveen Kumar has stated that deceased Karthik Merla's friend Kishan Poojary and his associates had murdered Charan Raj as vengeance.

First you set up one community against another community, one religion against another religion. In the end you end up fighting against your own kith and kin. This is where we are heading towards!n
