Mangaluru: Hijab-clad students denied entry in city's University College

Mangaluru, May 30 (IANS): The hijab crisis is yet again showing signs of resurgence in Karnataka as some students were sent back from their college on Monday in Mangaluru city of Dakshina Kannada district.

Twelve hijab-clad students of University College in Mangaluru tried to enter classrooms, but were stopped by the college authorities. They were sent back after refusing to take off their hijabs.

These students were sent back on earlier occasions also after the college reopened following the protests by hundreds of students against the wearing of hijab in classrooms.

After being refused to enter classrooms, the students went to the office of the District Commissioner (DC) of Dakshina Kannada Dr Rajendra K.V to submit a memorandum in this regard. The students demanded that the DC direct the college management to allow them inside classrooms with hijab.

The hijab crisis, which started as a protest by six students of Udupi Pre-University Girl's College, has turned out to be a major situation in Karnataka over the past year.

The issue attracted international attention. The students filed a petition with the High Court seeking permission to wear hijab in classrooms. The High Court constituted a special bench of three judges and heard the petition immediately.

The Special Bench headed by the Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi dismissed the petition filed by the students and observed that wearing of hijab is not an essential practice in Islam.

The government of Karnataka has issued guidelines for the schools and pre university colleges making uniform compulsory for students without giving any room for wearing of hijab in classrooms.

Change the Government in center as well as state, they may get relief. That may be the alternatives, But now follow the Court order strictly. If this types of protests continue means disturbance to all students. Already the ranking has come down for SSLC students, same will repeat for degree students. Nobody can overtake the rules.

Its not the govt that has brought these restrictions. Its the people who are fed up of the hate and violence from a radicalised segment. The sad part is that the more you restrict them a greater majority starts to get radicalised thinking everything thats written in thier books is coming true. All this will only hurt them and no one else. wait and watch. This is only the start.

Change of governments will not make any difference at this stage. Paani sar se ooncha ho chuka hai. People’s mindset need to change which can be brought about only by religious heads and community elders, not by politicians.

When you know that HOMA HAVANA, POOJAS, SHLOKAS, TRISHUL DISTRIBUTION, GUN TRAINING etc. are allowed for majorities and Hijab isn't allowed, its time to change the college where hijab is accepted.

I dont think anybody is stopping these students from attending a religious school or Madarassas were such attire is allowed. Lets not be a burden on others. There are students from the middle and lower middle class section of the society who go here to study and cannot afford private tuitions .Guys let them not miss classes . I saw this being a teacher myself and understand the pinch of missing portions especially in higher classes.

What do you say this political right wing group are carrying out weapons training for students, police want to have young student’s team. Students are exploited and used by this govt to achieve its selfish ulterior motive. FYI, Hijab is only a defence attire doesn’t offend in any way.

The supreme court judge had 2months bak said he wud list the matter in 2days. Now there is no clue about it. A sense of injustice prevails. One group are openly curtailing these girls rights. Another group of well educated people are silently enjoying the show working in islamic countries. Sign of brotherhood is completely lost in this country. It took 8 yrs to bring the country to this level

The students have to follow the high court orders. Thats it! . This attire is not permitted in any Educational Institutions. Gulf countries too do not mandate this attire. Meanwhile, No matter how hard and loud the Indians claim, to this day no Gulf citizen has acknowledged Indians to be their kin on basis of religion. Its just 'hindi' for them and the same expat rule applies.

Good. Like I told before, if some boys from a religion, as is their tradition , insist on wearing a Langot, covering bare minimum, on coming to college, etc, then what to do? Utter chaos. So good thing.

Why so stubborn. Are you here to study and gain knowledge and become a responsible citizen of the country? When in the college or studying institution please follow the their requirement. No point in pushing against the law.

I dont think even Intl. human rights organization would interfere. in the matter. Time for them to obey by the High court decision and concentrate on their career.
