Mangaluru, Jan 21: Dakshina Kannada district has been witnessing a spate of new Covid positive cases. At the same time, positivity rate too has been climbing. The highest active infection cases are in the 21 to 30 age group. However, in the 0 to 5 age group, the infection is minimum with only 26 students having been infected.
As per the statistics between January 1 and 17 this year, 53 students in the 6-10 age group, 145 in the 11-15 age group and 676 in the 16-20 age group are coronavirus active.
This time, the wave is not only different but it also is spreading much faster. During the said period, 5,865 new covid19 positive cases were identified. Out of them, Covid continues to be active among 4,181 persons. Out of 5,865 people, 2,672 are women. The officials say that the infection can be contained only of the people get themselves vaccinated, and follow Covid appropriate behaviour like wearing of masks, remaining at home, maintaining social distancing,, using disinfectants when washing hands etc.
The health department officials believe that the corona active cases are more in the 21 to 30 age group because young people in this age group generally feel that they will not face problems even if they are infected, and this age group is hesitant to follow Covid behaviour. Therefore when they come in contact with people in other age groups, others also get infected. In the third wave, seven persons aged over 70 have died, the officials point out.
