Belagavi horror: Nurse kept vaccines that killed 3 babies in hotel fridge

Updated

Belagavi, Jan 17 (IANS): The probe into the deaths of three babies after measles-rubella (MR) vaccination in Belagavi district of Karnataka has revealed that the nurse had obtained the vaccination vials one day earlier from the pharmacist and had kept them in a hotel fridge along with food items, violating all protocols.

This led to bacterial infection and after the administration of these vaccines the three babies died due to 'aseptic shock syndrome'. Two deaths were reported after being vaccinated at Bochagala camp on January 12 while one death was reported from Mallapura camp on January 11. As many as 17 babies were vaccinated at Bochagala and four babies had received shots at Mallapura in Ramdurg taluk. Two girls, one 18 months old and the other 12 months old are recovering in hospitals.

Karnataka Health Minister K. Sudhakar stated on Monday that directions have been given to immediately suspend nurse Salma and pharmacist Jayaram. He said he had ordered another probe into the incident and directions have been given to submit the report within two days.

Dr Eshwar Gadad, District Immunization Officer of Belagavi, stated that as per the protocol the vaccination vials have to be taken from the primary health centre (PHC) to the vaccination camps and they should be returned to the PHC. "Nurse Salma should not have carried them and kept them in a hotel fridge. All vials obtained by her have been taken back and sent for tests. This is an unfortunate incident. The department has taken care of it and parents can come forward for vaccination of their babies," he said.

The utter negligence of the health worker is said to be the reason for the tragedy, according to the district authorities.

Pavithra Halagur, a 13-month-old baby girl died on the same day after being administered the first dose after developing nausea and vomiting a few hours after vaccination. Umesh Karagundi, a 14-month-old child, though shifted to the Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS), had convulsions in the ICU and died on January 15. Chetana, a 15-month-old baby who got the shot in Mallapura camp also died on the same day.

Children below the age of 15 months are given the first dose against MR and above 15 months are given a second dose.

MR vaccine tragedy in Belagavi: Probe reveals health worker's negligence

Belagavi, Jan 17 (IANS): The probe into the death of three babies after their measles-rubella (MR) vaccine here, has revealed that negligence on the part of one of the health workers is the reason for the tragedy.

Following the probe, a government health worker has been suspended. Two other girl children, one 18-month-old and another 12-month-old are recovering in the hospital.

The health worker who inoculated the babies at anganwadi centre in Ramdurg taluk of Belagavi district had allegedly not taken aseptic or surgically sterile measures which led to the deaths. Children below the age of 15 months are given the first dose against MR and above 15 months are given the second dose.

At least two deaths were reported after vaccination at Bochagala camp on January 12 and one from Mallapura on January 11. As many as 17 babies were vaccinated at Bochagala camp and four babies had received shots at Mallapura camp in Ramdurg taluk. The utter negligence of the health worker is said to be the reason for the tragedy, according to district authorities.

Pavithra Halagur, a 13-month-old baby girl died on the same day after being administered the first dose of MR vaccination. She developed nausea and vomiting a few hours after inoculation. Umesh Karagundi, a 14-month-old child, though shifted to Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS), developed convulsion in ICU and died on January 15. Chetana, a 15-month-old baby who got the shot in Mallapura camp also died the same day on January 11.

The district authorities maintained that a detailed probe is underway and it will reveal the exact cause of deaths and nature of negligence. The action has been taken on the findings of the preliminary probe.

Belagavi District Health Officer Dr S.V. Munyal said that the guilty will be punished without any mercy regarding the incident. There is a committee to look into the adverse effects of vaccination. The samples of blood, excreta of babies have been sent to the laboratory and the report will give a clearer picture. Apart from this, the department is also conducting an investigation.

The vials are air/water-tight. By keeping them in a fridge, hotel or home, CANNOT lead to bacterial infection. The nurse has been made a scapegoat in the search for quick answers. There must be other issues that contributed to the deaths of the infants. Indian Government hospitals have far too much infant mortality. Because the people accessing these services are very poor, no one cares. That is the fundamental problem. For the system to improve, someone at the district level must pay the price for negligence.

I fully agree with you. Sepsis takes a longer time and if at all an abcess would have occurred at the site of injection. If it was anaphylaxis which can occur with any injection, it would occur within minutes. Probably something else ( not the vaccine) is responsible. A fridge is a fridge hospital, hotel or home that cannot be the cause. To prevent such incidents in future, all injectables should have a bigger readable font size, maybe on the packaging, if it is not possible on the vial, at least 3 persons should verify before injecting something, it should be given in the right dose at the right place, aspiration before injection to confirm it is not injected in a blood vessel etc.

Vaccines are supplied in hermetically sealed vials so the question of contamination doesn't arise, except that it could lose it's potency if not maintained at a certain temperature!

It looks like the higher ups are protecting the vaccine manufacturer and the poor nurse is being made a scapegoat. Vaccines require a cold chain to be maintained, so the nurse had done the correct thing by storing it in the fridge. Failure to follow aseptic precautions will only cause infections like abscess at the injections site. Rapid deterioration after injection usually happens when there is allergic reaction to the contents of the vaccine.

Fully agree with Sandy, Rapid deterioration due to inoculation happens only due to allergic reaction..... Also am sure this vials would have been in sealed condition..... Poor nurse is being made a scapegoat..... When Corona initially struck and the entire world was groping in the dark, many of the doctors who were privileged to have the PPE kits, went to the extent of refusing to attend the patients unless the patients proved to be Covid negative whereas it was the nurses and health workers (including ambulance drivers, cleaners etc.) who without any kits were in the forefront of the battle; in face to face with the infected patients..... unable to go home fearing of carrying the infection home..... Let us not victimise these people..... They are the angels.

More alibis will get announced to cover vaccine adverse effects blaming the vaccinator for all the bad things. This is nothing new as we've been seeing in media- if anything our forces achieve it is credited to our Supreme Leader, if our forces suffer Pulwama like incident then he isn't to be blamed! 4 decades back our neighbour nurse used to keep her vaccines in our Fridge and nothing happened then as they are sealed and no way anything can contaminate them unless they are opened and kept in same fridge we used to store our food in. If fridge had no electricity for a long time then they will become useless only as it would lose its potency. For those people who have the habit of pressing dislike do your research and find in US alone 4&half billion dollars have been granted by US courts for the victims of vaccine injuries and deaths until 2019. No vaccine companies are prosecuted for criminal negligence or offence as they have been indemnified by Ronald Reagan since 1986. This is the reason they dare to market useless and sometimes toxic jabs for gains as govt compensates the victims from taxpayers money while vaccine companies only care about profits. They got around $ 400 billion from taxpayers money to research the covid Vacs but they are marketing $1 vaccine @ $30 per shot. In our country it is believed Rs 20 vaccine is bought for Rs 300 by government and one can calculate why business for gains is taking place all around the world. In our country oral polio vaccine is injuring around 50000 malnourished children but a new name like Acute Non paralytic Syndrome is given as we have got a certificate of eradicating polio from WHO.

It is not a new case of keeping vaccine some other fridge. Whether department is provided the required facilities to keep vaccine in their premises and refrigerator was working. Is the vaccination done by qualified nurse and wrong person suspended. The contents and standard normss analysed in lab and expiry date. If it wrong punishment to persons punished, then the ordered person and government to be published. The judicial enquiry to be conducted to save life in future. Political punishment not acceptable

Many times, the doctors only change the needle but not the syringe wich is very risky with high chance of acquiring deadly infections; but in this case it appears that the injection was contaminated or fake!

According to the eminent doctor and scientist since 20 years no vaccines have saved single life. Vaccines contain mercury, formaldehyde, aluminium, neomycin, kidney cells of monkeys to name a few which are added as adjuvants and additives as only attenuated vaccines fail to create antibodies which cause these adverse vaccine injuries and deaths. But corrupt mafia will blame the innoculaters as culprits to wriggle out of their liabilities as they have money power and politicians in their book. Poor vaccinator is the scapegoat here. In the past in Bangalore hospitals healthy newborn kids died after getting 5 vaccines together and were discontinued immediately. Small kids don't have developed immune system and they get all their immunity from their mothers as it feeds it passes on infections to mother and mother produces antibodies and passes on to their kids through milk kids feed on. Stop Infant multiple vaccines to kids if it's feeding mothet's milk.

As a rule injections including vaccines should be given only by a qualified doctor/ nurse. "Not taking aseptic or surgically sterile measures" does not seem to be the cause, because if sepsis or infection has to occour it takes days ( depending on the incubation period) more likely something else and not the vaccine was injected. An impartial probe will reveal the truth.

Monty Dotor, mangalore,Thank yo for supporting my thinking over this issue. Here was seriously something went wrong.I am thinking why only few babies died if any serum of vaccine was kept in fridge or hut ,others are alive.?of course if infected serum ,they get sick sick after some time.I am sure some outdated serum was injected?or some other by mistake given ?When they came to know it was wrong ,changed the vials.?whatever it is both have to be punished. There is always the formular ,see three times before injecting.right medicine ?right dosis, and right person?I feel so sorry for the families who lost their loving children .some others are in hospitals ,hope they will get well soon. Was the same needle used for all?So the reaction was there? In India ,Iam not so sure about the date of expiry of medicines. Many times I bought medicine which had expiry date.when asked Pharmacies have said I can use ,dont mind (Even after two years)does anyone in India test them?may these children rest in peace.Govt must compansate the families.

Kevin mangalore ,dont write something what you dont know and for writing purpose you write.Injections can be given even without wearing handschuh.Since corona came everyone uses handschuh.:We used to give injection without wearing handschuh in 60s.But have to use during surgical treatment .or to treat wounds use handschuhe.Only should be careful not to touch needle when injecting. .
