Woman BJP MLA defends home minister's comments on gang rape victim

Bengaluru, Aug 28 (IANS): Karnataka BJP lawmaker Poornima Srinivas on Friday backed Home Minister Araga Jnanendra, whose comments on the gang rape victim had stirred controversy, saying that he was "concerned about the safety of women".

Srinivas, a first-time MLA, urged the media not to take his statements negatively. "I request you to take those statements positively. The minister wanted women and girls to be careful," she said.

"Generally, people observe and come to help if women are troubled. But, during nights, women will not get help. Womanisers will also wait for this opportunity and they think no one will rescue the victims. Even after puja in the temple, if you get late, you are exposed to danger," she said.

"The concept of safety should be understood by women and girls themselves. However, they are also free to go anywhere at any time, we can't stop them," she added.

Jnanendra has stated that the woman victim should not have gone to such a lonely place late in the evening.

Tourism Minister Anand Singh went to another extreme and stated Dubai model of punishments should be given in India for heinous crimes like gang rape. "However, ours is a democracy and it is not possible," he said.

Congress MLA Lakshmi Hebbalkar also said that the rapists should be punished in such a way that the very thought of committing such a crime shouldn't occur to them. "They go to the extent of committing gang rape, video graph the crime and extort from the victims... they must be hanged," she said.

Former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa expressed confidence that the culprits will be arrested by Saturday and they will be taught a lesson.

@kujuma, what i meant was those who are very protective of their women are also pouncing on this woman BJP MLA. This woman said that women need to be careful while going out late in the night. It will be sheer hypocrisy if one wants to be protective of their women by forcing a dress code and many other edicts on women but would talk against this woman just because she happens to be BJP MLA.

Modi led BJP and RSS is largely seen as saviors of Hinduism and Nation. Its a perception every bhakth carries with them and defends it to the core. Unfortunately, their defense lacks facts, figures, reality, honesty, sincerity to nation. Every bhakth uses the same terms against congress, Gandhi fly, so much of development done dont you see, etc. etc. Why petrol costing more, why unemployment all time high, why farmers are losing hope on pro-industrialist govt., why corrupt and criminals flock to BJP, where is the black money? Why our borders are encroached by China, why daily soldiers are dying in terror attacks in J n K, why economy is in negative, why ED, CBI, IT are only acting as dabang gang. BJP wants you to believe, these questions are irrelevant. Very true, but it only for their survival as political party, that is pushed nation backwards by at least 20years already.

I condemn these boys' action, for their act they will get the punishment. It was reported in Times of India, that they found, when a young woman boards a bus or train holding a child, men specially young men get up and give a seat to her. But, women do not give, because they say that they too went through that stage and let this woman also experience the pain of bringing up a child. Likewise, many women in our housing society say that the girls should be careful at this age and they too had gone through that age. And if they still want to go out in the night, let them wear a chastity belt and go. They said no doubt they blame boys, but they also say, when you have gold ornaments, you have to guard them. It is not my view.

It should be remembered that the male accompanying the rape victim in Mysuru was also assaulted, and a huge sum demanded from him - 3 lakhs, according to news reports. Why is the rape victim reluctant to file a FIR, is there something more than meets the eye. These days no person, male or female is safe.Police cannot be present at all places all the time, even if they are present at the scene , mostly they do not help. They do not help after the assault also. The system is such that assaulters move freely and the victim suffers, typical is the Baliga murder case in Mangalore.General public do not help for obvious reasons. The solution, though not complete, is that we have to be alert and careful all the time (easily said than done), also one should learn how to fight back and escape.

Monty Dotor, agree with all the points you have made in your comment. A story goes that a king wanted to cover the entire kingdom with leather so that no one would get diseases from vermin in the ground. Somehow some wise man was able to convince the king that covering the entire kingdom with leather had various issues. Similarly, police cannot prevent 99% of the crime. It is the job of the citizens to take precautions. Just as people have grills on their windows, and lock doors of their houses when going out. The opinions expressed by the ministers are 100% valid - not just in India but any part of the world.

Mr Kujuma, In this forum it is not difficult to deduce who is who. Anyhow as far as your wearing veil by Hindu women is concerned, it might be for variety of reasons including that opposite sex do see them should they get attracted. It is left to the women's choice. however, there is no punishment codified for not wearing headscarf nor it is imposed by mysogynists.
