Koppal: Police address water shortage by building pond

Daijiworld Media Network - Koppal (SP)

Koppal, Jul 3: A pond has been constructed to ensure that the police residential quarters do not face water shortage. With this, the problems faced by the family members of the policemen here have been permanently addressed.

The unique feature of this pond is that inspired by the district superintendent of police, the employees of the department worked voluntarily and created this pond. This pond now has not just remained as a water resource. It has turned into a picnic spot.

For the police personnel of the district, four years back, 120 quarters and eight officers quarters were built near Basapur over an 18-acre land. Even though water tap connections were provided, the water supply was not enough. Therefore, the families of the policemen dithered from living here. Even after four years of the inauguration, only seven families were living here.

Sridhar, who was posted as the district superintendent of police here, understood this problem. In order to solve the water problem permanently, he planned to build a 25 feet deep pond over 2.5 acres of land. The water stream that flows to Ginagere from Kidadala was blocked and diverted to the pond. A relative of the SP came forward to extend financial help. Whenever they were free, thie policemen came forward to work there. With the support of the armed reserve police force and others, a beautiful pond has been created.

Because of this pond, the water problem of the policemen has become a thing of the past. Because of good rainfall this time, the pond now has about ten feet of water level. With the increasing water level in the pond, the underground water table for the borewells has improved. Therefore, police families which once hesitated from coming here, are shifting here. Now, most of the quarters have been occupied. People opt to come to these quarters as it is in the outskirts of the town and the environment is good. the policemen have also grown plants around the pond and turned it into a picnic spot by providing sports and gym equipment.

One of the reason I migrated from India in 1984 was anticipating future water crisis. Sometimes in my hometown talassery we didn’t have water to take bath also for 2-3 days. My visionary move is being proven right seeing situation now in India . Other reason was the widespread assault on secularism and corruption by BJP . Both is proven right. Groundwater depletion is major issue in India with corrupt reckless builders putting borewells everywhere. There is no scientific analysis and every year monsoon is deficients. This will getting worse . Only way out is desalination of sea water on large scale. Sea water is ample and freely available . Sea should be diverted into such lakes and then large scale desalination done. This will solve India water issues but govt apathy is making situation worse. To help corrupt builders and water tanker lobby govt is not doing any solution for this problem
