Mangaluru: HOPCOMS’ exorbitant prices burn a hole in consumers’ pockets

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, May 13: As the public has minimum time span to buy essential commodities on weekdays and complete lockdown amid growing cases of Covid-19 cases during the weekend in the district, a few outlets of the Horticultural Producers' Cooperative Marketing and Processing Society (HOPCOMS) in the city are charging exorbitant prices for fruits and vegetables.

Though the main objective of the establishment of this organization was to ensure profitable prices to farmers and reasonable rates to the consumers, a few outlets are charging sky high prices. In addition, a few outlets do not issue proper bills.

In the district, the HOPCOMS outlets remain open till 9 am during the weekend lockdown. Recently, during the first-weekend curfew, people including the elderly, flocked to buy vegetables and fruits at the HOPCOMS outlet at Urwa market. When people gathered in large numbers, police disbursed the crowd swinging their canes. Using the situation, the shopkeeper at the outlet charged Rs 1,004 for purchasing a kilo each of sapota, pomegranate, muskmelon, and watermelon, without issuing a bill.

In another case, speaking on condition of anonymity said, "The HOPCOMS outlet in Bondel is also charging exorbitantly. When a kilo of bananas cost Rs 60 at other shops and Rs 50 also at a few of them, the HOPCOMS charges Rs 70. Even other fruits and vegetables are really expensive. I brought a few vegetables and fruits paying Rs 1,000 there. The same at the central market in Hampankatta would cost a much lesser price. People who can afford to pay, may go for HOPCOMS. What about the economically backward ones? The government has allowed only the HOPCOMS to run the show on weekends of which they take advantage. The authorities have to cap the prices.”

I find lockdown in India is not regulated properly.whereas here in Germany ,with all lockdown ,people can buy essential food stuffs in shops whole day ,but other materials shops are restricted or closed according to the corona number.suppose childrens clothes shops etc, only a limited people are allowed inside, after filling up a form about his data.Suppose within 15 days no positive report appears from this persons ,data will be thrown away or torn. This helps everyone to live peacefully with all lockdown. Now it has come down ,so soon we may have free movement ,without mask or restaurants ,attend other relatives etc

If rates are exorbitant ,then better boycott the HOPCOMS. That's all. I have gone around and many fruits shops are open. Otherwise Chitki, Farm fresh many online shops are giving at reasonable price.

Make your regular purchases from different outlets never mind if you have to go to 4or 5 shops for grossaries. Many things are very expensive in Reliance and More. Be wise instead and save. It is better than complaining.

Yes very True rates are exhorbitant. Moreover they do not pay rent to Mangalore city corporation. Their outlet at Kankanady was demolished as no rent was paid. Please boycott them. The rates for vegetables and some fruits are very reasonable at Reliance outlet in Falnir.

Last week I visited hopcom of kadri shivabhg, branch. I checked the price when picking the long beans ( lathande ) they said it is rs 80., thure some thing 50 , egg one dozen 70 but billed 93 for lathande , 72 on egg and thure rs 63. This is some kind of robbery of the customer. This same problem happened to me during lockdown at april 2020 in the same outlet Wish them all the best for looting the innocent customers !!!

Same is the situation in Marnamikatte HOPCOMS. They cheated me on repeated visits. First I thought it was a genuine mistake, but later I realized it's a scam. If I ask for 1 kg apple, he will put 1.25 kg and charge for 1.5 kg. This is absolute nonsense. What is the government even doing. Why is there no regulatory body. Electronic bills with pre determined prices in the machine is the need of the hour!

Ek police ka chauka aur ek shopkeeper ka.

Will the Hindutva based government ban sale of alcohol ? No, it makes it more expensive by raised taxes so that people limit the consumption. What is the holy government doing with such money ?? Putting up gaushaalas ?? Eventually to ship the cows to Sabarwal Brothers' farm ? Both the way 'haraam ki kamaayi' in order to play musical chair.

I don't understand why people jump into some other topics, stick on to the issue here. It's an individual choice whether to drink alcohol, eating non veg, watching movies or wearing clothes. Why wear expensive Jeans while we could save it by wearing lungi or burmuda. Like a wise man once said " Why eat 7 Chapathis when you could survive with one". Hope authorities will take action, Again what can we expect, not much I believe.
