Coronavirus infection’s second wave hits hotel industry hard in Mangaluru, Udupi

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru/Udupi (SP)

Mangaluru/Udupi, Apr 22: The hotel industry has been delivered a deadly blow by the coronavirus infection like a bolt from the blue. After going through a lean patch for several months, it was showing signs of some recovery when the second wave of the deadly pandemic has crushed its hopes.

As per the latest guidelines of the government, people cannot consume food inside the hotels and restaurants. Then can only collect the take away. This rule alone has deprived the restaurants of 60 percent business.

Some of the hotels, after closing for the period of the previous lockdown, never opened their doors because of high maintenance cost and decline in business. Those working in hotels and restaurants have lost their jobs. The coastal belt of Karnataka, which was once known for the restaurant business, has been going through the worst nightmare and several have committed suicide, having been unable to meet their commitments.

Many are not comfortable with the idea of taking food home for consumption. Weekend curfew has deprived the hotels of having some decent business during the week end. Because of the fact that tourism has taken a hit, the business of the restaurants and hotels were on the downslide. Secretary of Hotel Owners Association, Nagesh Bhat, explains that curfew coupled with ban on consumption of food inside hotel premises have come a shock for the industry.

Of late, because of coronavirus fear, customers are working from home and staying away from hotels. If the situation does not improve, thousands of hotels will be closed down and several thousand will be driven to streets. Hoteliers are in deep debt and they do not know how to meet salary bills of employees, rent, loan instalments etc. Udupi District Hotel Owners Association president, Dr Tallur Shivarama Shetty, says that the second wave has decimated the hotel business and most of the hotel owners are unable to meet rent, power bill, salary of workers etc.

Mostly Yes. He is a powerful leader with mass following. Lots of andh bhakts listen to him. Also he chairs all the meetings during crisis. His cabinet makes policies. People do not make policies themselves. Kumbh Mela could have been avoided. Elections in Bengal over some many phases ? Why ? Safe restrictions could have been put in place. However, India is strange place. Its impossible to control and impose strict rules. We, Indians, are really arrogant. Nothing can please us. People are equally to blame too. Don't forget - we are a country who are obsessed with political leaders and movies stars. After god, we do idol worship for them too.

Make no mistake !!! The hotel industry is just one of the many industries, which has collapsed from the Covid19 pandemic... Our health sector is " PATHETIC " There are no hospitals with beds, Oxygen has dried up, ICU have shut down, vital drugs have disappeared... even the medical fraternity, has become absolutely disoriented, due to the massive wave, of patients !!! Netas are busy abusing, playing ugly politics shirking responsibilities on to their political foes !!!!!

Instead of cribbing. Hoteliers should start attractive offers on takeaways. In this present pandemic takeaway option is much better and safest. Soo don't loose hopes and create history in takeawy business 👍🙏

Very true. Most hotel owners and other food service businessmen like grocery shop owners, are definitely not Congress supporters...all are blind bhakths and now they are suffering because of their Idol and his antics with no planning whatsoever...all votrasi he has done.

Restaurant industry took a big hit of 30% after demo and GST; Corona was the last nail in the coffin; only those who are running on their own property may survive, many others have already shut down or will be forced to shut down soon, and there does not seem to be any hope in the near future! Also with rising unemployment & closing down of lacs of companies, people don't have money for discretionary expenditure! With India's reputation spoiling internationally because of total failure in controlling the Corona virus, the industry is doomed for now! I am telling this from our experience of running a restaurant for 3 years & taking heavy losses!

True. but no one learnt lesson from last lockdown. No COVID precautions maintained in any of the hotels when COVID had comedown (since Nov20) but not gone totally. Even people are not ready to follow basic hygine...& change lifestyle & remain cautious...this is the result....

But I can say this also that customers are clever than these hoteliers, now a days most of the hotels have increased the rates, and the quantities also they have reduced, and the take away parcel container size also day by day become small. So I think that many customers have started to cook at home only. This may also a reason that hit the business.

With ever increasing costs of commodities, business uncertainty, increasing overheads, the only way to control costs is decreasing the quantity as against increasing the price which is already pinching the customer! As the virus waves up and economy goes into a tailspin the situation is going to worsen and most restaurants will have to close down! Also nowadays a new trend has started where many people have started delivering home made food, as per requirement, at competitive rates, which is much better than hotel food! One can see so many advertisements for sale of used hotel equipment or even running businesses which itself indicates that many have wound up! Those who opened recently are in dire straits as they will not be able to pay back the loans & creditors will start hounding them! All in all, it's a tough situation!

What we face today is a man made disaster..... Exported over 1000 metric tonnes of oxygen during pandemic and supplied 71 countries vaccines.... Now short of both oxygen and vaccine... Kept Kumbh alive with lakhs of devotees together, organised full packed election rallies (and still ongoing), ridiculed opposition whenever some gives advices... BJP passed resolution in Feb 2021 thanking PM for his leadership in defeating covid... Now when cases are on rise, state govt are responsible ??? No accountability at all? How shameless one can be.. Please know one thing.. INDIA iS NOT MODI !! and MODI IS NOT INDIA !!!!!!!! Start questioning the govt at least now before its too late.

They might be already under deep financial crisis, they thought they will make a quick buck after end of first wave but it was clearly anticipated & predicted that a second wave lashes! One should be ready for a third wave too which hopefully will be mild!
