Mumbai, Sep 1: Auto-rickshaw and black-and-yellow taxi fares in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) have been increased by Re 1 and Rs 2 respectively, officials said on Tuesday.

With the revised fares, the minimum charge for an auto-rickshaw will be Rs 27, while passengers travelling by black-and-yellow taxis will have to pay a minimum of Rs 33 for the first 1.5 km.

The fare revision comes after Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) increased CNG prices by Rs 2 per kg from midnight, taking the rate to Rs 88 per kg in the MMR.

The revised fares were approved by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) based on the formula recommended by the four-member Khatua panel. The formula takes fuel prices and other operational costs into account while determining fares.

According to an RTO official, the taxi fare has been increased from Rs 20.66 to Rs 21.90 per km, while the auto-rickshaw fare has risen from Rs 17.14 to Rs 18.22 per km.

This is the first fare revision in 18 months. The previous hike of Rs 3 each for taxis and auto-rickshaws came into effect on February 1, 2025.

The MMR has more than 4.5 lakh auto-rickshaws and over 50,000 black-and-yellow taxis, most of which operate on CNG.

Drivers can implement the revised fares after recalibrating their electronic meters or by displaying the fare table approved by the RTO. They have been given three months, until the end of November, to complete meter recalibration.

Officials warned that drivers who fail to recalibrate their meters within the stipulated period could face penalties.
