Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (JD/SP)

Udupi, Apr 20: MLA K Raghupati Bhat has undertaken 'barren land cultivation movement' all over Udupi assembly constituency. As the first phase of this movement, the work of desilting of drains to allow water to freely flow into the fields, was jointly set into motion by the MLA and deputy commissioner (DC) of the district, G Jagadeesha.

Initially the drain through which water flows into the fields near Kelapsarkala Gopalakrishna temple in the city was taken up for clearing the debris.

Speaking on the occasion, DC Jagadeesha, said that the act allows the government to take into possession agricultural land that has been left untilled for two years. He said that the tahsildars have been advised to identify the lands which have been left uncultivated. "In the second stage, we will serve notices to owners of the lands. Even thereafter if they do not undertake farming, there is provision for the government to take over the lands that are uncultivated," he stressed.

Raghupati Bhat said that the movement will be undertaken in 35 wards of the municipality and within the limits of certain gram panchayats. He said that the department of agriculture and others have been extending support for the programme.

City BJP unit president Mahesh Thakur, chairman of Urban Development Authority, Raghavendra Kini, municipal standing committee chairpersons Girish Anchan, municipal councillor Manjunath Manipal and others were present.

There is lots of land in various parts of the state and our politicians are blind. They hit were it hurts the land owners who are helpless with new and creative ideas of these politicians. Where are the resources coming from for these projects. Very high labour costs, scarcity of water, manure , seeds and other self supporting experiences have left the farmers with big losses from the produce and crops. Mechanising, fuel costs are not sustainable for small parcels of fields. Teach, train and financially support farmers before coming out with dictatorial idea. MLAs, Panchayat Members are politicians who want to show they are helping people. Let them first live by examples. Cleaning the water ways once in a bloom do not help. What happened to good old Five Year Plans and Green Revolution of old days to bring sufficient food for the population. Please do not misuse this temporary powers they have for a term they serve. What happens when they are defeated in the next election!!

Very strange rules. My father is 90 now. He has worked 18 hours a days in his land but due to age and labor scarcity he barren the land. Such rules makes no sense and some hidden agenda with such people. It is landlords responsibility to do whatever they desire than government to force them to do certain act on thier property. Leaders take decisions without proper consultations with public opinion is not good.

Alwyn D souza Canada, dear Alwyn ,I understand what you say.In mangalore there are so many such farmers with barren land due to lack of labourers. Some have simply planted Areca,or coconuts.Later they have lent it on years basis ,to cultivate ,or clean and they pay the land lord certain amount .Same thing can also be made by your father instead of leaving it simply so.It pays back.Or allow it someone do cultivate it with veg .Both benefit from it.

First find out the root cause for untilling the agricultural land. Is it due to water scarcity? Labour issue, expensive labour? exorbitant fertilizer price? no good price for the produce? expensive transportation cost? What if Govt take over these lands and again if govt do not do any cultivation..?? All these are one sided rules to be reframed...
