Mangaluru: Faculty development programme held at Shree Devi Institute of Technology

Mangaluru, Mar 27: Shree Devi Institute of Technology organized a one-day Faculty Development Programme for Shree Durga Parameshwari Temple First Grade College, Kateel on the topic 'Drive the New Normal An Academic Perspective'.

Dr Rameela Shekhar and Fr Saleen Joseph were the guest speakers.

Dr Rameela Shekhar, a Mental health professional at Manashanthi, Mangaluru addressed the gathering on the topic 'Positive well being in the new normal'. She pointed out the significance of the mental well being of teaching faculties in handling the student community. She said modern-day faculties have got utmost responsibility of moulding students to the need of the time because the world is changing fast and students need to cope with it. The pandemic has an impact on students' psychological well being and it has created panic, obsessive-compulsive disorder anxiety etc which as a faculty have to handle with good knowledge.

Faculties have an important role in changing the mindset of students from negative to positive or positive to growth-oriented etc. The faculty needs to follow certain proven methods like recognizing and identifying feelings, expressing the feelings, recognize the impact etc and also solutions like self-awareness; self-regulation and all should be able to meet frustration without violence.

Fr Saleen Joseph, director and skill trainer of Unique Edu Skills, Beltangady, addressed the topic 'Teacher’s competencies for preparing the students for the next normal'. He stressed the point of changing teaching methodologies from just classroom teaching to experimental learning. The modern-day education system has to change from traditional classroom training to mentoring, leadership skills, life skills, entrepreneurial skills, indoor games, outdoor games etc all of which will help students gain required skills and knowledge to compete in the present competitive world. "The world is changing fast. We as faculties need to update and prepare students for facing the competition. Experimental learning will give a student an experience of the topic, subject etc which he/she will be able to remember throughout." Fr Saleen Jospeh also insisted on changing the behaviour of the faculties from demanding respect to giving respect to students. Classroom training has to be unique so that a student will show real interest in learning any concept.

In the inauguration Dr Gayathri B J, HoD MBA Department, welcomed the gathering, Dr Dilip Kumar K, principal of Shree Devi Institute of Technology, Dr Krishna Kanchan, principal of SDPT College, Kateel addressed the gathering, Dr K E Prakash, director of Shree Devi Institute of Technology was the president, Professor Shwetha Shetty, convenor of the MBA department was present. In the valedictory programme faculties were awarded certificates as a token of appreciation.
