Mangaluru: Rising prices of fuel, other products - Hotel industry hit hard

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Feb 23: The hotel industry that was already tottering under the weight of woes heaped by the coronavirus pandemic, is now in doldrums on account of hike in the prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas. Hotel owners who are suffering due to the blows delivered by the price rise are in a fix as they cannot increase the prices of the eatables.

The hotel owners say that to offset the increase in prices, they have to increase prices. However, they are apprehensive of losing their customers if they do so.

After the coronavirus lockdown, some hotels had increased their prices. Some others had hiked the prices beginning January 1. Rates were increased by one to four rupees on an average per item. Because of this price rise, some hotels lost their business and closed down, a few hotel owners claim.

Some hotels have reserved only about 75 percent of their tables for the customers now but they too rue the fact that these seats do not get occupied. They are fearful that under these circumstances, if they increase the prices, a part of the current customers may stop visiting them. Therefore they are compelled to somehow manage with the situation.

A hotelier from Udupi says that vegetarian hotels are somehow able to break even in spite of rising cost of items. A hotelier running a non-vegetarian hotel at Mangaluru says that prices of palm oil, gas, fish, coconut oil etc have gone up. He says that increasing the rate of eatables now is very difficult at a time when the people and businesses are recovering from the coronavirus effect.

This is a lesson life long for electing BJP government. They are bothered only to make BJP Strong throughout india. Not bothered about any hardship of the people. They made country's situation miserable. Public must wake up.

Anybody running a restaurant by paying exorbitant rentals is sure to succumb to heavy losses given the present economical conditions! One can see around how many shops have closed down with big stickers outside saying that they are available for rent or sale? This is the real ground status of MSMEs, which is perhaps for the first time in independent India!

Many popular eateries/bars have closed down already, many on verge of closure due to business cut of 30-40% by not affording to pay high rentals; remaining employees are not getting paid for 2-3 months; even many wine shops are on the verge of closure as sales are down drastically due to high liquor costs & tipplers having no fixed income as before; economy is in shambles, many people with loans to pay are on verge of suicide!

But our central government and Modiji ,FM claiming that fuel prices are less in BJP ruling states compared to other party Government. Secondly because of Congress rulled last 70 years, they are the reason for price is high and Present Government is not responsible. I think finally all hotels in India, Ambani and Adani will buy. They may declare TEPLA and DHOKLA are the National Food.

Still there is No internal democracy in Congress. and there is NO performance appraisal in the Party. Instead of electing able, Young and well educated leader and cashing the failure of BJP , all Old Owls Congress are holding tail of Gandhi family for personal gain. This is the root cause of BJP 's rise in 2014 /2019.

Price of Pakodas preparing by Andh bhakts also increased and due to this bhakts are now planning to invent gas from gutter to minimize the use of LPG Gas cylinders. This situation arises when educated people elect ministers who literally do not have any concern about developments but only playing religious politics.

Many eateries closed down right after demo, GST, final nail in the coffin was hit by Covid19 where even those with deep pockets were hardly able to sustain; now with tremendous price rise in fuel rates, lack of business, many more will not be able to sustain or break even; in which case, it doesn't make any business sense to pump money from your pocket & run the business! With another round of Corona expected anytime, people losing jobs, the hotel industry is doomed!!

High fuel prices are mainly due to exhorbitant TAXES. In Covid crisis, so many people lost business and income, over and above are HIT hard by HIGH TAXES on fuel. Fuel is regularly consumed. It has escalated transportation costs, so everything will become costly, that's when income is low. Our fuel prices / taxes on fuel, seems highest in the world!

Crude oil prices were very cheap internationally during lockdown due to decrease in demand. Instead of passing the benefit to citizens, government increased excise tax. Now when crude oil prices are increasing, government isn't lowering the tax! In 2014, excise duty on per litre of diesel was 3.56. Now it is 31.83!
