Mangalore, Dec 3: The latest incident of a car catching fire due to the technical problems of using Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) and petrol alternatively occurred near Capitanio School on Thursday December 3.

The Omni (KA02 B2332) that had just been returned from the workshop after some repair work, burnt down completely due to a technical fault in its LPG conversion equipment.

The driver of the vehicle was plying it towards the city along the highway when the fire was noticed in it. The driver got out and escaped without injuries.

Within three minutes, the car burnt down and only the metal parts remained on the spot, said the eyewitnesses.

They said that the driver of the car tried to save some important items from the car but there was no time for him to even open the windows of the car.

The fire department personnel doused the fire completely and contained it which could otherwise have caused damage to public property.

As a result, a traffic block held up commuters on the road for nearly half an hour. The vehicles were backed up for a kilometre from Pumpwell Circle.

In another incident, near Nanthoor Cross in Kadri, the signboard of a shop in City Gate building burnt down due to a short circuit. Personnel from the fire department doused the flames.

The owner of the shop said that the incident occurred due after rain showers which caused the electric wires connected to the lights in the signboard to short circuit.

Provide modern equipment & dress to the valiant fire-fighters with new situations they are facing. dousing fire with the cumbersome extinguishers is difficult just see the racing circuit & see how well they control the fire with modern fire extinguishers. Electrical fires shouldn't be doused with water, which might electrocute the personnel itself. The gas fittings should be of modern make which stop gas automatically should they detect the gas leaking. These are very few steps I have mentioned to stop these tragedies from repeating.

Readers have missed the point. The car was operating with illegal conversion kit device. These illegal kits fixed in public transport vehicles are a threat to public and hence the responsibility of the RTO to confiscate these vehicles. But what are they doing? Are such violations on record? I am afraid none.

VERY SAD INCIDENT INDEED..., THIS SMOKE IS VERY DANGEROUS ...SMOKE OF BURNING WIRES OF VEHICLE, HARMFUL TO HEALTH. FIRE FIGHTERS SHOULD USE BREATHING APPARATUS WHILE EXTINGUISHING THE FIRE.

These fire fighters are real heroes. They fight fire and risk their life to protect others with minimum protection gear. Hats off to them.
