Mangalore, Sep 23:  Karnataka Governor, H R Bharadhwaj, launched the Community Radio Sarang 107.8 FM at St Aloysius College (SAC) in the city on Wednesday, September 23, with the inauguration of the radio studio.

After the launching ceremony of Radio Sarang, the Governor, in his Speech on Mass Media and Responsibility said, the media and the judiciary are the major wings of the Indian constitution and therefore these wings should never be allowed to get polluted. Both are the ways of finding out the truth, especially the media goes searching for the truth, whereas the others do not go out. So, the media has got lot of responsibility towards  the society and also it needs to be bound by the values held high by our constitution, he stressed.

Comparing the St Aloysius Group of Educational Institutions campus to Oxford and other universities abroad, the Governor said, “I am privileged and happy to be in this campus”. He also wished that Radio Sarang will dedicate itself to the job of serving the society and also to strengthen the value systems of the society.

Union minister for law and justice, M Veerappa Moily, speaking on the theme, ‘Challenges to law in the 21st century in the context of cyber crimes,’ said that the union government is contemplating to enact  a law to deal with all the cyber-related crimes. He also said that the students, by gaining knowledge about the cyber crimes, can avoid committing such offences in future. The young generation should be prepared to face all the challenges to effectively deal with such crimes in future, he advised.

The union government is quite abreast of the happenings in the cyber world, including the terrorism angle connected with it. Hence, there is a need and a challenge before us, to stay away and avoid all these offences, he said, adding that in a couple of months, the union government would be coming out with a new law to meet  all the challenges of cyber crime.

TV Studio also was inaugurated at the College, along with the inauguration of the radio station.  The programme of public lectures, associated with the branch of SIRC of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), followed the radio inaugural.

It is very encouraging to see the present governor Sri Bharadhwaj taking active interest in minority institutions. Recently he was present for the conference of the bishops in Bangalore and reassured that the minorities would be protected. He is seen again at St. Aloysius College actively participating with the activities of St. Aloysius.

Indeed St. Aloysius has progressed in different areas and the the recent project at Beeri is worth mentioning where QUALITY EDUCATION is imparted. Kudos to the pioneers - the nine Jesuits who landed on the Idgah Hill in the year 1880 and commenced their mission to impart education to youngsters irrespective of caste and creed and today the mustard seed that was sown has grown into a might tree.

The present venture into MASS COMMUNICATIONS is a step in the right direction and I hope that under the leadership of Father.Richard Rego the project will gain momentum. Speaking about this particular sphere another Jesuit who was earlier the Principal of St. Aloysius College Rev. Dr. Eugene Lobo is doing a great job in Rome at Vatican Radio Station. It is a matter of pride to us the past Aloysians to see Our Alma Mater spreading its wings.

People from all over the world are now watching with keen interest the multidimensional progress of St. Aloysius. Here in U.S.A. the old students have formed a non-profit taxexempt organization under the name and title APNA (Aloysian Partners in North America) which has recently been up-graded into API (Aloysian Partners International). For details one can download the web - www.apnanet.org Kudos to all concerned who have collectively been responsible for the all round growth of St. Aloysius. Joe Gonsalves
