Kolkata, Dec 17: After chief minister Mamata Banerjee took out protests against the Citizenship Act, West Bengal Governor, Jagdeep Dhankar on Tuesday claimed that the Act was not going to impact Indian citizens. He said that it was a 'balm to those facing persecution in the neighbouring countries'. Taking to his official Twitter handle, Dhankar urged the citizens to maintain peace and harmony.
"Citizenship (Amendment) Act has no impact whatsoever on any citizen of India and no one has anything to worry about regarding this act. It is a balm to those who have faced persecution outside, have no other place to go except India. I appeal to all to maintain peace, unity, brotherhood," Dhankar tweeted.

His statement has come in before a significant meeting between him and Banerjee which is to be held on Tuesday.
"I am optimistic that my meeting with Hon'ble chief minister today will address all her concerns and would also be enlightened by her point of view. Dialogue and communication at our level must take precedence as it is the quintessence of spirit of the Constitution we all follow," he added.
Dhankar believes that his meeting with Banerjee will be fruitful and will help tackle the sensitive situation in the state.
On Monday, Banerjee held a protest march in Kolkata against the Citizenship Act 2019, and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). The chief minister had strongly voiced her anger over the Act and declared that she will not allow the implementation of the citizenship law and the NRC in West Bengal.
