No impact on Indian citizens, balm to those facing persecution: WB Guv Dhankar

Kolkata, Dec 17: After chief minister Mamata Banerjee took out protests against the Citizenship Act, West Bengal Governor, Jagdeep Dhankar on Tuesday claimed that the Act was not going to impact Indian citizens. He said that it was a 'balm to those facing persecution in the neighbouring countries'. Taking to his official Twitter handle, Dhankar urged the citizens to maintain peace and harmony.

"Citizenship (Amendment) Act has no impact whatsoever on any citizen of India and no one has anything to worry about regarding this act. It is a balm to those who have faced persecution outside, have no other place to go except India. I appeal to all to maintain peace, unity, brotherhood," Dhankar tweeted.

His statement has come in before a significant meeting between him and Banerjee which is to be held on Tuesday.

"I am optimistic that my meeting with Hon'ble chief minister today will address all her concerns and would also be enlightened by her point of view. Dialogue and communication at our level must take precedence as it is the quintessence of spirit of the Constitution we all follow," he added.

Dhankar believes that his meeting with Banerjee will be fruitful and will help tackle the sensitive situation in the state.

On Monday, Banerjee held a protest march in Kolkata against the Citizenship Act 2019, and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). The chief minister had strongly voiced her anger over the Act and declared that she will not allow the implementation of the citizenship law and the NRC in West Bengal.

    Mr. Governor:
Generally it is our duty to give shelter to anyone who is discriminated very cruelly, irrespective or his religion, irrespective of his nation. But, On what basis you are awarding Indian Citizenship to those immigrants from Bangladesh when there are absolutely no means to validate that all of those who are in India are really the oppressed class?.

India has already signed Assam Accord where the people of Assam State were assured that no Citizenship will be awarded to any immigrants who are in India after 1971? About 80 Assamese citizens sacrificed their lives during that time to get their rights. All those sacrifices will go to waste and Assamese feel cheated now.

Mr. Governor said: "Citizenship (Amendment) Act has no impact whatsoever on any citizen of India" Unquote.

It is for sure, the NRC in Assam, which has already resulted in atleast 19 lakh immigrants who are going to be shifted to detention centre. A study shows that the cost of maintaining that detention centre will be 8 Lakh Crores/one year. This amount is 1/3 of the total Indian Budget.(of 25 lakh crores). This is for only for the state of Assam. It is expected to be 40 lakh crores for all over India.

It is also to be noted that the population in those detention centres will keep on growing. Nobody knows till when it will go on like that. India has assured that it will not send them to Bangladesh. Even Bangladesh will not accept them without proof. So the Cost of maintaining those Detention centres will keep on growing exponentiallly.

The point to be noted here is that there is no way to conclude the immigrant Bangladeshis if they have immigrated to India because of persecution or just for Financial Betterment. Whereas, it is very clear in the case of Rohingya Muslims that they have been systematic Genocide carried out on them in Myanmar; and there is no Citizen ship would be awarded to them as an act of kindness/ showing solidarity with the oppressed.

    Mr. Governor:
When the Government cannot stop lynchings and desecration of places of worship of its own minorities in its own country and there is absolutely no punishment for lynchers (infact lynchers are felicitated by the Bjp government) how can the Government think of giving justice to minorities of neighbouring countries. It is on an average 1 hate crime per week.

They were sent by Bjp it seems. They are as uneducated as BJp ministers who insist that Bjp is doing very good and argues that if the GDP has come down to 4.5% from 8% why there are traffic jams in the city?

It makes no difference if it is from Congress or BJp linked channel. I don't expect anything from any Politicians except very few like Gaurav Vallabh. We have to fight for our rights.

If Mr. Governor is so much concerned about the persecuted Minorities in neighbouring countries; then why are you not giving Indian Citizenship to Persecuted Tamil Immigrants from Sri Lanka who are staying in Tamilnadu.
Why are you not giving Indian Citizenship the Rohingya Muslims who are killed in Myanmar. UN has declared that Killing and rape/gang rapes of Rohingyas is one of biggest Genocide of recent history., which was sponsored by state machinery. Does our Government cares about giving shelters only Non Tamils and Non Muslims when they are killed or gang raped in neighbouring countries?

If i could meet the Governor i would have asked him-

Can he ask Mr. Modi why he had vowed that he will drive away all infiltrating Bangladeshis back to their country during elections of 2014. Didnt Mr. Modi know that they are persecuted there in Bangladesh?. Why Mr. Modi changes his stance depending on the election dates?

People cannot ask Mr. Modi because he never conducts Press Conference. So atleast the Governor can ask some questions on our behalf.

    Partially right.
BJp MP from Unnao, Mr. Shakshi Maharaj had told that (referring to the 2 sisters who got raped by Dera Swami Ram Rahim Singh)- "Can you believe those 2, when there are Millions of followers of Ram Rahim who still belive him"?
So there might be a chance that Dera Protestors were paid protestors; but the students against CAA are very well educated and unbiased.
