Udupi, Nov 27: Legal Day was celebrated on the premises of the Udupi Court on Wednesday November 26. Speaking on the occasion, after inaugurating the celebrations, K M Phaneendra, district and sessions judge, said that no law can beat the constitution and societal law is not greater than legal law.

According to Hindu law, a man cannot marry another woman without separating from his first wife. If this happens, the second wife is not given any legal rights. But it is socially wrong and the second wife should also be given a right in her husband’s property, said Phaneendra. The law formed by us cannot be bent. There will be people to misuse it, he added.

After independence, law came into force on November 26 and it is celebrated as Legal Day. Law should help people lead a normal life. They should be aware of their duty and rights, he said. Nirmala Kumari, lecturer, Vaikunta Baliga Law College, delivered a lecture on the occasion.

B Shivalinge Gowda, judge, Rapid Court, and Mattar Ratnakar Hegde, president, Lawyers’ Association, were present. M Ramachandrayya, chief civil judge, welcomed the gathering. Vijay Kumar Shetty compered the programme.
