1.49 pm: "My political life has been such that I feel I have become a controversial person": Kumaraswamy

1.48 pm: "Cannot say people have given full mandate to any party this time. I am still trying to understand the kind of mandate people have given. The same happened in 2004 when we saw a hung assembly": Kumaraswamy.

1.45 pm: Kumaraswamy addresses the house prior to moving the trust vote

1.44 pm: Speaker invites Kumaraswamy to move the confidence motion.

1.40 pm: "I was sure B S Yeddyurappa would decide to elect me unanimously, because even though he and I do not interact much, we have mutual respect for each other": Ramesh Kumar. He also asked the media to be responsible and not sensationalise any news unnecessarily.

1.33 pm: "Request all MLAs to conduct themselves in such a way that people who are watching news or reading newspapers do not feel let down by us": Ramesh Kumar

1.24 pm: Ramesh Kumar gives thanksgiving speech. Stresses on the sanctity of the assembly. "Ordinary people do not have access to this door, so they have elected you to represent them, and you are expected to conduct yourselves with dignity," he reminds the MLAs.

1.32 pm: Speaker Ramesh Kumar makes announcement of Yeddyurappa's appointment as opposition leader and Govind Karjol as deputy.

1.20 pm: "We have seen you as speaker from 1994 to 1999. You were a friend, philospher and guide to this house": Suresh Kumar to speaker Ramesh Kumar

1.11 pm: Krishna Byregowda speaks followed by BJP's Suresh Kumar. 

12.57 pm: BJP's Govind Karjol addresses the assembly, followed by Congress MLA D K Shivakumar.

12.53 pm: "Your vast experience will come into play in your role as speaker. First time legislators should be given opportunity to speak in the house. This is a coalition government, and I am confident that as a speaker you will protect the interests of the government as well as the opposition. You have been elected unanimously and that is how it should be. I congratulate all the MLAs especially of the BJP for making this possible": Siddaramaiah.

12.49 pm: Siddaramaiah brings a lighter moment to the proceedings with a mention of Ramesh Kumar's background as criminal lawyer. "It is important that the speaker is proficient in his knowledge of the Constitution. Special congratulations to you," he says.

Siddaramaiah also remember former speaker Bantwal Vaikunta Baliga for his style of functioning as a speaker

12.45 pm: Former chief minister and Congress legislative party leader Siddaramaiah addresses the house

12.41 pm: "I had urged the opposition to look at the speaker's post as an apolitical one and I am happy that the opposition did so. I thank Suresh Kumar for backing out. I congratulate the speaker": Dr Parameshwara.

12.41 pm: Deputy CM Dr Parameshawara addresses assembly.

12.39 pm: "Even though BJP's Suresh Kumar submitted his nomination for speaker's post, we decided to withdraw his candidature to uphold the dignity of the speaker's position. The post of the speaker is apolitical. I hope you (Ramesh Kumar) have a great stint and we hope to conduct ourselves in the requisite manner": Yeddyurappa

12.28 pm: B S Yeddyurappa addresses the assembly.

12.36 pm: "I hope that Ramesh Kumar fulfills his duty as speaker as he did from 1994-1999. Of the 221 MLAs elected, there are new MLAs and a number of women legislators. I hope that Ramesh Kumar guides them with his experience. I congratulate Ramesh Kumar on being elected the speaker": Kumaraswamy.

12.30 pm: "There were questions about the question marks over the young age of the Ramesh Kumar in his earlier stint as speaker, but the fact that Ramesh Kumar has gone on to become minister and now speaker again is a proof of his calibre": Kumaraswamy.

12.29 pm: Kumaraswamy congratulates new speaker, thanks the house for electing Ramesh Kumar.

12.26 pm: Chief minister Kumaraswamy addresses assembly after speaker election.

12.26 pm: K R Ramesh Kumar takes the speaker chair. Yeddyurappa goes over to congratulate him.

12.24 pm: K R Ramesh Kumar elected speaker of Karnataka assembly unapposed.

12.22 pm: Proceedings begin with pro-tem speaker K G Bopaiah presiding.

12.14 pm: MLAs take their seats in the assembly. First the election of the speaker will be held, then the trust vote.

12.09 pm: "The 117 MLAs of Congress and JD(S) are present in full strength. We expect the speaker election to go smoothly. I am confident that our government will be stable and last for five full years. There is a coalition dharma to be followed - we should respect each other and communicate. Kumaraswamy himself has admitted that he will not repeat the mistakes of the past alliance": R V Deshpande to NDTV.

11.54 am: "We expect Congress MLAs to rebel," says BJP leader Shobha Karandlaje.

11.53 am: "Confident of winning floor test, I have no tension," says CM Kumaraswamy.

11.49 am: "Reports that D K Shivakumar is unhappy are nothing but rumours. He is extremely involved and busy in his role in the party": Congress Karnataka in-charge K C Venugopal.

11.42 am: Ramesh Kumar of Congress and BJP's Suresh Kumar in race for speaker's post. Proceedings to begin at 12.30 pm.

11.31 am: "JD(S) is out to destroy Congress, hence I won't talk about the Congress. My battle is only against H D Kumaraswamy and JD(S). If he fails to waive farmers' loans, BJP will strongly protest": former CM B S Yeddyurappa

    The threat has not passed. BJP will still keep trying from today till the next five years to poach MLAs from the Congress-JDS. Better if some 15 to 20 BJP MLAs cross over to the Congress. Matter will be settled and Yeddy can retire peacefully.

    If BJP wants to hold a bandh, let them do it now itself. Why wait for Monday to disrupt our normal lives? Banks are going to be closed on 4th Saturday and Sunday. There won't be any formal loan waiver before Monday.

    ministers have not yet been appointed.

    He is ceaselessly accusing JDS now and sparing INC.
