Udupi: Mentally-challenged Children not Burden to Society

Udupi, Mar 23: Being exceptional is not a curse and special children are not burden to the society. Physcial or mental deformity is never a hurdle for anyone from achieving if he/she is determined to scale greater heights, said Dr G Shankar, resident of G Shankar Family Trust.

He was delivering the inaugural address at the cultural programme organized by G Shankar Family Trust at Ambalapady Shamili Auditorium for the specially-abled children, here on Saturday March 22.

The special children should be helped to rise to greater heights by providing platforms such as the programme organized here, where they can exhibit their talents. The opportunities provided will definitely inspire them to stand on their own feet, he added.

The Disability Pension Support and Disability ID card are not the same. Those who are in need of the certificate may approach the district hospital, here on every Thursday and Tuesday, said Dr P V Bhandary, psychiatrist of the district hospital. 

All those who are mentally-challenged and suffering from serious mental illness are entitled to the pension, provided the annual income of their family does not exceed Rs 6,000.

As many as 130 exceptional students from 8 special schools in the district exhibited their talents. 

Vijaylakshmi Shenoy, deputy director of department of Women and Child Development presided over the programme, Anand S K, secretary of Vagjyothi School welcomed the gathering and H Ravindra, headmaster of school delivered the introductory address while M Govinda compered the programme.  

The programme was organized in association with Vagjyothi Deaf and Mentally-retarded Residential School, Moodubage –Maree.
