Mangalore, Mar 22: A group of protesters led by Octavia Albuquerque met M Veerappa Moily, chairman of the Union Administrative Reforms Commission (UARC) and Ramanath Rai, ex-minister of transport here at Balmatta on Friday, March 21.

The group were protesting with placards in front the Shanti Niketan premises, demanding a solution to the problem of soil erosion at Ullal beach. The shoreline here is subjected to severe soil erosion.

This is particularly severe due to the twin factors of high floods in the river coupled with strong wave activity due to heavy rain, which has already started in the city.

Therefore to prevent bank collapse and soil erosion which occurs regularly, the protesters were demanding some kind of a permanent wall or bund to prevent the same in the Ullal coastal belt.

Their grievances were heard attentively by both Veerappa Moily and Ramanath Rai, who assured them by stating that they would look into their problems.

I would like to bring to the notice of the public that the acute problem of erosion of the Ullal beach is not the result of the present floods and wave activity. The Public works Department around the year 1980 started building break waters on either side of the mouth of the Nethravathi and Gurpur rivers to train the River mouth, as also to avoid periodic dredging of the entarance channel of the river mouth.

The Central Water and Power Research Station (CWBRS) at Kadakvasla (Pune), had given the procedure of constructing the break waters along with protection of the southern coast, that is Kotepura-Ullal, using off shore break waters. Unfortunately while the break water has been constructed the off shore break waters to protect the Kotepura-Ulla coast has not been started. Due to this, severe erosion has taken place for the past 20 odd years and land to the tune of more than 350 meters has disappeared, along with a hundred homes and the sea is threatening to eat more parts of the land. There have been many representations to the Chief Minister downwards, but no permanent solution has been taken. The solution as pointed by the CWPRS is to build off shore break waters which will protect the shore off Kotepura- Ullal and also help to deposit sand and build up the eroded coast.

The illegal activity of sand mining in the river bed of the Netravathi river which is carrying on unabated is further aggravating the problem of sea erosion. This problem has been caused by the Government and has to be remedied by the Government Immediately.
