Sharjah : Mother of Two Robbed and Raped at Home

Sharjah - Feb. 05: A MOTHER of two was attacked, allegedly raped and robbed by an unidentified man who barged into her house in Sharjah's Yarmouk area on Sunday morning.

The Indian woman, who sustained a head injury, is undergoing treatment in Al Qassimi Hospital. The accused, who also robbed her jewellery, is yet to be arrested by Al Gerb police who have registered a case of rape, assault and theft.

However, the victim's husband, who was away at work in Dubai when the incident took place, chose not to accept the rape theory. "She could hardly speak when she phoned me. She hasn't told me anything (about rape) and I don't want anything like that to have taken place," he told The Gulf Today from the hospital.

According to him, the incident took place when his wife returned home after sending their elder daughter to a school in the neighbourhood.

"She had stopped by the tailor's shop while returning from the school. She reached home around 8:30am. This man rang the bell sometime later. When she opened the door, he forced his way in and hit her on the head with something," he said.

Apparently, the injured woman was raped in the presence of two-year-old second daughter. "It took more than an hour for me to reach home. She was terrorised," the husband said.

Neighbours who spoke to The Gulf Today said they could see bruises on the woman's bleeding face while she was being taken to the hospital.

The woman is under treatment in the Critical Care Unit. "She is unable to speak properly and goes into convulsions at times," a source in the hospital said.

Second incident

Residents said a similar incident took place in the same area on Monday. A man tried to break into the house of a woman living in the building next to the rape victim's house.

The middle aged woman, who did not want to be named, told The Gulf Today that she was alone at home when she noticed somebody was trying to open the locked door.

"I was on a phone call when I heard noises at the door. Initially I thought it was from my neighbour's house. Then I saw that our door key had almost fallen off the lock as somebody was trying to push it from outside. I couldn't see him since he had already damaged the peephole," she said.

"I was terribly shocked and I pushed the key back, screaming for help. By the time my neighbours came out, he had taken to his heels. When I peeped through the window, I saw a man wearing white long pants and a leather jacket running away. I firmly believe that he could be the same person who attacked the woman in our next building," she said. The housewife said her husband later went to the police station but did not lodge a formal complaint.

According to residents, daytime thefts are common in the area even on Fridays when people are at home.

Yarmouk Area in sharjah which is close to the sharjah church and sharjah labour office and opposite to the sharjah etisalat Main building and just two miles away from the AL-Gerb police station, which are usually small apartments (ground single storey buildings) without any building security.

None of the building has a watchman or a security system. When you enter these buildings and walk four steps, you will find there are four doors close to each other of the apartments. When a person knocks on any one of the door everyone can hear it and no one knows on whose door it was knocked. And all the four apartment members can see the person standing right in front of their doors through their view finders. And also the terrace doors of the buildings are kept open.

You will never know whoever stands there belongs to that building apartment or not. This is a strange place to live in a country where they do have international standard of buildings, road structure and strict laws, especially in Sharjah where there is no sale of pork or liquor, only liquor permits are sold (issued) to buy from another emirate.

These structures are absolute negligence of the sharjah muncipality to build these type of buildings which has no security at all or common lights around those buildings. People live overthere because of high rise in rent for the apartments in UAE. This sort of environment gives an advantage to buglary, theft and incidents like this which really brings fear and terror in the minds and a shock to the community.

This incident happened at broad day light in the morning when children go to school and every one is busy to go to work. It is cruelty, brutality and inhuman to do such kind of an act.

Those who had done this have to get good punishment from the Sharjah Police.
