Mangalore, Oct 12: Umashree, president, State Congress Backward Wing and former Congress MLC, addressed a press meet here on Thursday, October 11.

Speaking on women’s issues at the meet, she declared that priority should be given to women while forming its district and block committees. She informed that the state wing had decided to give 33% reservation for women in its committees. The decision was taken with the view to empowering women from backward classes in all fields. She promised that her party the Congress, if it comes to power will see to it that the Women’s Bill is passed in parliament.
According to Umashree, presidents were appointed to 28 district units of Backward Wing of the party and the process of committee formation would be completed by November 20.  The observer appointed for the Backward Wing for Dakshina Kannada, Karwar and Shimoga districts was the former minister Vasantha V Salian, she informed.

From the second week of November, district and block-level conventions of the Congress Backward Wing will be organized. While the district convention would be held in the city in the third week of November, a state-level convention would be held in Bangalore in December, Umashree added.

Others present at the meet were former minister Vasanth V Salian, former ZP president Mamatha Gatti and Congress leader Ivan D’Souza.
