New Delhi, Sep 14: In a surprise development, Rahul Dravid on Friday expressed his desire to step down as the captain of the Indian cricket team.

Dravid met BCCI Chief Sharad Pawar here on Thursday and expressed his desire to relinquish the post.

“Rahul Dravid met Sharad Pawar at Delhi on September 13 and expressed his desire to step down as the captain of the Indian team and requested that he should not be considered for the job from the ensuing Australia series”, a BCCI press release issued on Friday said.

Dravid has assured that he would extend his full co-operation to his successor and contribute as a batsman and a senior player. “Rahul wanted to concentrate on his game”, the release said.

BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla said the board will consider his request and look for a successor.

“He has expressed his desire to quit and has written a letter to the board president in this regard. The board will definitely consider his request”, Shukla said.

“He has been requesting for the past couple of days. He was feeling burdened as a player and captain. The BCCI will now consider the options”, he said.

Shukla said Dravid did not give any indication during the tour of England that he wanted to step down. “I think the reasons are personal. He must have pondered over it”.

In case the BCCI accepts Dravid's resignation, a new captain has to be appointed within the next two weeks before Australia's tour of India gets underway from September 29.

Many a times, I have been a vehement critic of Rahul Dravid, especially in late 1990s and early 2000s, when I felt this man was not suited for one day cricket. However, all said and done, he is a very good test batsman and one of the legends of the game.

If cricket enthusiasts who believe in averages and not just 100s and 50s scored by a batsman, then Rahul Dravid is the best batsman that India has ever produced. You just can't compare Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar. They are no where near him as a test batsmen.

I respect him for deciding to resign. He must be having valid reasons for the same and he must have gone through intense pressure and mental torture which we, as laymen, are not able to fathom. However, I do not think anyone of the present lot can be his worthy successor.

Saurav Ganguly is old. Sachin Tendulkar is not only old, but has very poor track record as captain and inspite of his past credentials as a great batsman has lacked the stature and personality to lead people. Mahendra Singh Dhoni is a totally rustic person and inexperienced too. So India is in deep trouble.

Rahul Dravid has been a decent person and reminds me of English batsman of yore, namely David Gower. If Dravid has decided to reliquinsh captaincy, this must have become due to many situations. It is not simple or a cake walk to become the captain of the Indian team. You have to please various officials of BCCI and be subservient to him.

Dravid has made a Hasty Decision. Just before going for Australia Series he gives up his Captaincy to concentrate on his batting. Ricky Ponting, Alan Border have not only played superbly for Australia but have also captained to many Wins not only in Australia but also overseas.

Dravid does not want to take a Risk of getting a clean Wash Out in Australia. Just as a Kingdom needs a Bold and Strong King in the same Way the Indian Cricket Team requires a Bold and Strong Captain and you have the qualities. If he wants to concentrate on his batting to make records, do not think about it as winning Matches, especially with Australia under your Captaincy will be a bigger record than your batting. Take it as a Challenge .

"Great Captaincy"  He should continue until next world cup.  If the reasons are personal, he should be "stp up" for the country. Rahul Dravid is a great asset to Indian cricket team.

Well done Dravid. It is a noble and brave decision to take off as a captain and concentrate as a batsman to bring glory to India

Right decision by Dravid. He is not aggressive captain. Team India captain should be aggressive and his hold on the players. Dravid missed all these. Not enforcing followon on England in one of the test matches giving reason as bowlers were tired shows clearly his lack of killing instinct.

So now BCCI has big job on hand. Hope they will be successful in finding suitable replacement for Dravid. We need aggressive leaders like our own Kapil, Viv Richards, Botham, Ponting, Grame Smith, Imran Khan, Akram, Border and Ranatunga who has great influence on their respective teams.
