Women activists' plan to barge into Shani temple foiled

Ahmednagar, Jan 26 (PTI): A plan by 350 women activists to barge into the Shani Shingnapur temple in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra to break a 400-year-old tradition banning women from entering its sacred sanctum was today foiled by police when they were stopped at a village, 70 km from the shrine.

The moment the buses of activists under the banner of Bhumata Brigade reached Supa village, the volunteers led by its President Trupti Desai were disallowed from moving forward by scores of police personnel, who formed a ring to foil their march towards the famous temple.

Desai, who yesterday claimed her volunteers will climb down ladders from a helicopter to offer prayers at the 'chauthara' (platform) of Lord Shani temple if they are not allowed access, was detained and taken to Supa police station.

In a tense showdown, the activists vehemently protested against the police action and raised slogans and lay down on the road, screaming "it is a black day for women on the Republic Day."

"Police has stopped around 350 women at Supa and necessary action will be taken against them," Additional Superintendent of Police, Pankaj Deshmukh told PTI.

Desai, while speaking to reporters amid the stand-off, said that action against them was "condemnable" and that it was a "black day" for women as well as Indian democracy on the Republic Day." An angry Desai demanded to know why women were being discriminated against and asserted the activists will go ahead with their plans.

Urging the volunteers to remain firm on their stand, Desai said that they are launching a "satyagrah" on the spot and would not even drink water unless they are allowed to move forward.

"This is brazen violation of the constitutional rights of women...We want to know from Chief Minister (Devendra Fadnavis) why we have been stopped.. We will move ahead," Desai asserted.

Squatting and lying on the highway along with other campaigners, she alleged that they were "manhandled" by the police personnel and claimed that some of their supporters have already reached Shani Shignapur temple.

She urged the "young" Chief Minister to step in and take urgent measures to curb attempts and social mechanisms to suppress womens' voice and their empowerment.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Shani, the personification of planet Saturn, and women devotees are not permitted at the platform as per the tradition followed by the shrine.

Earlier in the day, Desai, leading the campaign, had declared that the women volunteers would try to enter the "prohibited premises" of the ancient temple to remove gender bias and defy the tradition that denied equality to women.

Security has been tightened around the temple and nearby places even as Ahmednagar district administration and police authorities sealed all approaches to the shrine, which bars women from entering the platform where Lord Shani is worshipped.

All entry points to Ahmednagar witnessed heavy security cover with barricades and police personnel deployed at every nook and corner of the locality to prevent the activists from reaching the temple.

Several women activists of Shiv Sena, Hindu Sena and some local outfits thronged the shrine to thwart the campaigners, who had started out from Pune in buses and jeeps with some male volunteers also in tow.

A woman trustee of the temple Devasthan, Anita Shetye, said that the 400-year-old tradition of the temple would be protected by women in Shani Shingnapur through a peaceful counter demonstration.

"We are determined to protect the time-honoured tradition of the temple," she said.

Desai had yesterday said her volunteers will come down using ladders from a helicopter to offer prayers at the 'chauthara' (platform) of the Lord Shani temple if they are not allowed access to the premises.

The shrine is dedicated to Lord Shani, who personifies the planet Saturn in Hindu belief. Women devotees are not permitted on the platform as per the tradition followed at the shrine.

The shrine has no walls or a roof. A five-foot-high black stone stands on a platform and is worshipped as Lord Shani.

A bid by the women's organisation to break the security cordon and enter the prohibited area of the temple was foiled on December 20 last year by security guards of the Shani Shingnapur Trust.

The Charity Commissioner's office had imposed restrictions on the proposed programme fearing damage to property.

The Joint Charity Commissioner, Pune, had sent a notice to the organisation against any move to enter the sanctum sanctorum.

Hindu Religion is mainly based on faith & traditions. Every temple, shrine, Mutts its own traditions & culture. For not allowing women in the temple, cannot be tell that gender discrimination, behind that may be some reason or tradition. So better to follow the tradition of each temple, as long as it make trouble to anyone.God is everywhere. This is my personal opinion.

There is no room for lawlessness. If these activists do not like being discriminated by the age-old Hindu traditions, they should build their own temple and worship their own gods installed in them. The tell the men not to enter.

it is a tragedy that women in India are always looked as second class citizen. Everybody should have right to pray in their holy places. I was surprised about devdasi culture which is being aired by Colours by name of krishnadasi and even a serial was shown in crime patrol where girls as small as 9 yr old are married to deity then they cannot marry and then they are freely made to sleep with men at a very tender and they cannot even raise their voice all this happening in the name of customs and culture and most surprising thing is that parents and relatives of men tell them youll can sleep with them but not to marry them imagine own family members allowing such immoral acts and then they say it is religious custom. Activist Dahollkar was killed mainly becos he opposed such superstition and as on date he is not conferred any awards.

In my opinion women and men should get the equal rights with regard to worship of Gods. But, I question where were these groups for the last 65 years. Did they woke up only after Modi became Prime Minister. These peoples are with leftist mentality like you. Why I am telling this is when articles on arrests of gaddaars of the country appeared in this forum we did not see your this aggression.
