Mangalore, Jun 7: "It will be too late by the time we realize the importance of safeguarding our environment," said Mangalore University vice-chancellor Prof K M Kaveriappa here on Tuesday June 5 on the occasion of World Environment Day.

The programme was jointly organized by the National Service Scheme (NSS) and the forest department. After planting the saplings, he said the global warming phenomenon would have its effect on crop production, which may result in a catastrophe.

Registrar of the University Sundar Naik, said that the awareness given to the students in schools with regard to environment should help in bringing about changes in the society.

Zilla panchayat assistant conservator of forests Shivaraj said the panchayats were protecting the environment by distributing plants at subsidized rates to farmers and cooperatives.
