Archana reaches quarters in Thailand TT tourney


Bangkok, May 16 (IANS): Indian paddler Archana Kamath reached the quarter-finals in the cadet girls singles event while she along with eight others entered the round of 16 in the SET Thailand Open Junior and Sub-junior table tennis tournament here on Saturday.

Archana, who also reached the pre-quarterfinals in the junior singles event, got a bye in the first round and won her second round encounter against Thailand's Mekamporn Naja 11-7, 11-2, 11-3 in the cadet girls singles event.

In the junior boy's section, Lalrin Puia and Utkarsh Gupta moved into pre-quarterfinals after winning their first round matches against Thai Tawan Metanee and Chan Yee Shun of Hong Kong respectively.

In the junior girls section, four girls secured pre-quarterfinal berths. While Sreeja Akula gained a bye, Archana, Shruti Amrute and Maria Rony advanced after they won their first round matches.

In the cadet girls section, other than Archana, Selena Selvakumar, Varuni Jaiswal and Srushti Haengadi moved into pre-quarterfinals. Selena got bye while Varuni and Srusthi scored straight set victories over their opponents.

Junior girls: Archana Kamath (Ind) bt Safrianti Bakari 11-4, 12-10, 11-7, 11-8; Shruti Amrute bt Anggwani Cahyaning (Tha) 11-8, 12-10, 11-8, 11-3; Maria Rony bt Pompavee Limsilajeerakul 11-4, 11-9, 12-10, 11-9.

Cadet girls: Varuni Jaiswal (Ind) bt Papatchaya Horakkit (Tha) 12-10, 11-4, 11-8; Srushti Halengadi (Ind) bt Naka Man (Hgk) 11-8, 11-4, 11-5.

Cadet Girls Round of 16: Archana Kamath (Ind) bt Mekamporn Naja (THA) 11-7, 11-2, 11-3.
