Afghan, NATO soldiers exchange fire, one killed

Kabul, April 8 (IANS): One Afghan soldier was killed and another was wounded in an exchange of gunfire at the provincial governor's office building in the eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar on Wednesday, while unofficial sources claimed three NATO soldiers were also wounded in the incident.

"A visiting NATO-led military officials' team was leaving the compound. An Afghan soldier opened fire at their vehicle. During the exchange of fire the attacker was killed and one Afghan soldier was wounded," a security official who declined to be named told Xinhua news agency.

Further details were not available so far about the gunfight that took place at around midday in the provincial capital of Jalalabad, the source said, adding that an investigation was launched into the incident.

Several NATO-led troops have been killed in insider attacks when Afghan soldiers or gunmen in their uniform opened fire on coalition troops over the past couple of years.

In January, three foreign contractors with the NATO-led forces were killed when an Afghan soldier opened fire at a military airport in the country's capital Kabul.

The US and NATO-led troops switched from combat to support role, which focuses on training, advising and assisting Afghan forces since January 1.

Nearly 13,000 foreign forces are currently stationed in the country and involved in the mission.
