Morelia, Mexico, Feb 20: Viswanathan Anand outplayed Norwegian GM Magnus Carlsen to register his first win in the Morelia/Linares Super GM tournament and join Ukrainian Vassily Ivanchuk in the lead after the third round here.

Anand, who drew his first two matches, was in control from start to finish in the Queen's Gambit game as he claimed his first full point in the event.

The Indian – playing with black for the first time in the event – now has two points from three matches.

Carlsen could hardly trouble the more experienced Anand as he beat the Norwegian in 40 moves to climb to the top spot on the table.

Anand will now take on Russian Alexander Morozevich tomorrow in his fourth round game.

Meanwhile, Ivanchuk split points with Russian Peter Svidler, while Bulgarian GM Veselin Topalov and Peter Leko of Hungary fought a theoretical battle that also ended in a draw.

In another game, Morozevich turned a dangerous position into a clear win against Armenian Levon Aronian, but missed a key line that would have got him the full point and settled for a draw.
