AAP rejects Bukhari's pro-AAP appeal

New Delhi, Feb 6 (IANS): The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Friday rejected the appeal of Syed Ahmed Bukhari, the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, to Muslims to vote for the AAP in Saturday's assembly polls in Delhi.

"The AAP seems to be in a position to form the government, and we must give them strength," Bukhari of the 17th century Jama Masjid in Old Delhi said earlier in the day.

The AAP quickly rejected his unsolicited support, accusing the Imam of practicing communal politics.

"Today, on the eve of Delhi polls, a man who represents regressive and the worst side of politics came out and gave support to the AAP," party leader Ashish Khetan told the media.

"We not only reject the offer made by Ahmed Bukhari but we also want to make it clear that the AAP is here to fight communal politics that Bukhari represents," he added.

Khetan said Bukhari's past utterances symbolized communalism. He added that when Bukhari annointed his son as the Jama Masjid's Naib Imam, he had invited the Pakistani prime minister but not the Indian prime minister.

Khetan also targeted Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who earlier criticised the AAP.

"The finance minister is practicing negative and regressive politics. They had no manifesto and no leadership in Delhi. They just attack the AAP and Arvind Kejriwal

"It is unfortunate that the finance minister does not lay out a coherent vision for Delhi," Khetan said, adding that over 70 percent of the budget allotted for Delhi by Jaitley in the central budget was still unused.

"The budget was to be used to build hospitals, lay pipelines, new colleges but 70 percent of it is still lying unused and will lapse because the financial year will end soon," he said.

Muslims account for over 11 percent of Delhi's nearly 17 million population. In the run up to the Lok Sabha polls in 2014, Bukhari called upon Muslims to vote for the Congress.

AAP doing politics of religion: BJP

The BJP Friday accused the AAP of doing politics of religion, adding that their rejection of the support voiced by Jama Masjid's Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari does not mean anything.

"They asked for support, and they got support. What does it mean to say now that they don't want support," BJP leader Nirmala Sitharaman said.

"Yesterday, AAP leaders were arrested at a protest organised by representatives of a particular religion. What were AAP leaders doing there," she questioned, referring to the Thursday protest against vandalism of churches in Delhi.

"It shows they are doing politics of religion. Who is the beneficiary of the 'fatwa', it is the AAP," she said.

"The correct answer to such fatwas is through the ballot," BJP leader Arun Jaitley said asking voters to vote against the diktat.

This is 100% the work of BJP dirty tricks department. The minutes after Bukhari spoke of his support to AAP, Mr.Jaitley comes to know in his press conference(magic) that Bukhari said this and he call it a Fatwa. How did he come to know so soon? Bukhari and BJP together wanted to malign AAP and played this trick. This Bukari fellow is bekaar and he will do anything for money. Very few muslims follow him.
BJP is full of cheats, liars and hypocrites. This party has come to power with lies and will perish with lies.

OMG!!!You should have watched Sandip Patra's face today on Arnob Goswamy's debate. He was utterly defeated and this will surely effect tomorrow's Delhi election.
Sandip, you better look for a job, Amit Shah will tare you apart. You proved your party is 100% communal & you will lose Delhi election. Modi supposed to be countries P.M. behaved like a paid B.J.P election campaigning staff. BJP will loose Delhi because of Kiran Bedi.

Hidayat, jab Imam apne bete ko Shahi Imam banaya, tab Pakistani mulk ke wazeer ko bulaya, MODI ko nahi, Sonia ko bulaya, Modi ko nahi!... and you think, he loves Modi? like every other muslim, he hates Modi to the core and want BJP to lose Delhi!.. Yes, so far his allegaince was with congress and now, since they are LOSING, he supported AAP! so that there is no confusion in his follower... miya, tum hi batao, galat kya kiya usne? barabar hidayat toh dee hai usne!

Vellanoji ...better know facts before speaking...Dont speak as if BJP has not taken support in past from bukhari
Jansangh benefited in 1970's from bukharis vote bank politics...
In 2004 the same bukhari supported BJP....
Like wise he has supported JD,congress ,SP....
One thing good about AAP they are different from rest of political party they outrightly rejected him which even your own bjp which opposes him have not done it in past....
Second thing what ever he had by not inviting modi and only sharif is utterly wrong but that doesnt mean that he only invited sonia Gandhi for his dynastic anointing ceromony of his son as Imam but also top BJP brass like rajnath singh and Nithin gadkari.. Dont practice seleccct-ive politics to benefit particular party...

    Very good move by AAP.
Not to accept support of any communals.
India is secular country. Vote as per our conscience, what is our experience should influence our voting pattern.
No one should influence voters on the basis of religion, race, group language, gender etc.
Performance and merit alone should be the deciding characters.
