Former Brazil striker runs for club presidency

Rio de Janeiro, Oct 14 (IANS): Former Brazil star Romario says he will be fulfilling "a football dream" if he is elected president of Brazilian football club America.

One of Brazil's oldest clubs, America have been in steep decline in recent years, dropping to the second division of the Rio de Janeiro state league, reports Xinhua.

"It is my football dream. I want to take America back to the top division," the former Barcelona and Selecao striker said Monday.

Romario, elected to Brazil's senate earlier this month, played one match for the seven-time Rio state champions in 2009.

"It's going to be hard work but I'm going to take it on," the 48-year-old said. "I promised to my dad that I would play there and I did. Now I want to help in another way."
