Djokovic to play Davis Cup tie in India


Bangalore, Sep 3 (IANS): World No.1 Novak Djokovic will lead Serbia against India in the Davis Cup World Group playoff here Sep 12-14, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) confirmed on its website Tuesday.

Dusan Lajovic, Filip Krajinovic and Nenad Zimonjic complete the line-up for Serbia, the 2010 champions. Serbia will be without Janko Tipsarevic, a former top-10 player, who is recovering from a foot surgery.

The Indian team will include Somdev Devvarman, Yuki Bhambri, Saketh Myneni and Rohan Bopanna with Anand Amritraj as the captain.

Krajinovic, at 22 and ranked 108, is the baby of the Serbian squad while doubles specialist Zimonjic, who was once ranked No.1 in the paired event along with Daniel Nestor, is the oldest at 38 and currently at No.7, brings in vast experience. He was also part of the 2010 team that won the Davis Cup.

Lajovic, at 24 and with a ranking of 61, is the other young gun in the Serbian team. The youngster showcased his talent during back-to-back quarter-finals in Bastad and Hamburg tour events, besides a fourth round finish at the French Open where he lost to Rafael Nadal.

In all, 16 nations will bid to secure places in the World Group for 2015 with Djokovic's Serbia determined to avoid dropping into zonal competition for the first time since 2007.
