Leonardo Mayer beat David Ferrer to win Hamburg Open

Berlin, July 21 (IANS): Leonardo Mayer defeated top-seeded David Ferrer in three sets 6-7, 6-1, 7-6 to lift his first title on the ATP Tour Sunday.

The 27-year-old Argentinian needed 2 hours and 20 minutes to overcome David Ferrer and to earn 272,300 Euros prize money.

The Spaniard won the first set 7-3 in the tiebreak but gave away the second set 6-1 to the World No. 46. Mayer utilized his momentum to break Ferrer's serve, making it 3-2.

However, the world No. 7 fought back and equalized the scores to 5-5. Thus, the tiebreak had to bring the decision, in which Mayer held the upper hand to convert his first match point after 140 minutes.

Both players destroyed all hopes of the spectators to see a German in the final as Alexander Zverev lost to Ferrer and Philipp Kohlschreiber to Mayer in the semi-finals.
