Bantwal: Nightmarish experience: Highway sinks to a new low at BC Road

Bantwal, Jul 21: India is a fast developing country, a country that has made considerable advancements in education, economy, IT and other sectors. However, one major concern that has not been given adequate attention is basic infrastructure, particularly the roads in towns and smaller cities.

Bad roads are nothing new; they have become a part and parcel of our lives. We often see two scenarios: first, the tar or concrete roads with potholes and secondly, roads that once upon a time were made of tar and have now turned into mud roads.

The ever-increasing number of potholes on national highway (linking Mangalore and Bangalore) at BC Road has become a death trap. Commuters find it a nightmare to travel on this stretch of the highway.

The three kilometer stretch leading from BC Road Kaikamba to Melkar is in a shambles. A travel on this stretch will bear witness to huge pits on the roads; every vehicle passing here has to pay the price and no one is exempted.

Come monsoon and the situation worsens; since the potholes are covered with water, they pose grave danger especially to the two-wheelers and three-wheelers and even worse, for pedestrians.

These potholes have proved costly as there have been many instances where motor cyclists have skidded and injured themselves. This danger is not reserved for riders alone, but also for those who travel by cars and buses who are forced to suffer bumpy rides day in and day out.

Sadly though, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) does not seem to be bothered about the prevailing situation. Fed up, the public and auto drivers have taken matters into their own hands and filled these potholes with stones.

And then there is BC Road service route which was constructed two years ago, which has become pockmarked with potholes. Due to the substandard work, the road is in a pitiable condition. Potholes cause another problem of water logging and whenever heavy vehicles pass over these potholes, the water is invariably splashed on the pedestrians.

Shriram Mishra, project director, Mangalore project office of the NHAI said, "If we fill the potholes during the monsoon, it will be washed away due to heavy rains. Hence we will wait for the rains to decline and then undertake repair work."

He suggested that the potholes should be filled with laterite. He also said he would send officials to the spot immediately so that temporary measures could be taken.

Speaking to daijiworld, the locals complained that neither the municipal council nor the tahsildar is taking any measures to correct this problem. They expressed their difficulty of travelling by road.

However, the blame cannot solely lay with the NHAI. Many heavy loaded vehicles too ply on the same road which cause its deterioration. These huge tankers, trucks carrying sand and fish are equally responsible in damaging the roads. The road unable to take the weight of these vehicles, crumbles under the load.

The highway is bad not only at BC Road, but at many other junctions too. This road has seen many accidents in the past many years. One more reason for accidents is the width of the road; it is understood that a national highway has to be broad, but when it comes to this stretch, this condition does not apply.

One wonders, if there ever will be any solution to this persistent problem. Or perhaps we are doomed to tolerate bad roads, as the cycle of suffering seems to just keep repeating no matter how many times the roads are repaired.

We are paying RS 25 as toll for the daily trip. It is unfortunate that after paying such a huge road tax and toll also, the govt is unfit to provide proper road fecilties also. It is shame on us.

Lot of money is being sanctioning for the roads repairs and new roads projects....!Because this is a very meaty and exciting project for the white wearing politicians. Common man is not aware of this fact.
What you saw in the above pictures is a only 20 paisawala road and balance 80 paisawala road you have to search in these leader's pocket...! Except Laalu, no politician is jailed....After serving only 2 months he come out gloriously to campaign for his congress masters....!
Robert Vadra's issue has become dormant now. He is also become quite...All politics....Modi also quite......! Vadra will become active when his Maama in Law comes to power possibly after 4 years.
Look at Mangalore -Udipi High way..Do you call it a High way? Since how many years work has being going on...? and still project is incomplete. But money allocated for that project might have been utilized...by contractor-politician nexus.....! These politicians are not serving the nation... They serve the nation only on August 15th.
We need educated people in the assembly and in the parliament irrespective of party line.

We will never get good roads, until & unless we hire some reputed foreign Contractors,& throw away our Corrupt, old, greedy, Dynastic politicians. Some of our blind commentators in DW r blaming Britishers for giving us good infrastructure during their rule. Now look at the state of same roads, highways, bridges & Ghat roads built by them. Shame on our Corrupt politicians & third grade Contractors.

It is useless to talk of responsibility\good work from Ministers concerned and the departments unless and until the Government is very strict with it's Ministers\contractors and departments concerned.
Until the responsible people are charged and made to pay for the losses the Govt. has suffered, the works they do will be of the lowest quality.
If a Contractor has to shell out various bribes to the tune of at least 40% of the contracted amount, how any one can expect good work from him? More over contractors usually are handicapped from non-release of Govt. funds in time which definitely affects them and results in shoddy work.

We see the results with our own eyes everyday of our life. This must change with accountability from all concerned in each of the Govt. projects.

BC road junction is in a total mess overall!! Just see the pvt. bus station which is made on a steep slope from the main road and too small for the huge population there!! The govt. bus stand does not have a basic bus shelter and there is steep downstep from the national highway, a potential danger to children and sr. citizens!!

There is no designated bus stop for buses coming to Mangalore, buses halt beside a muddy place with huge ups and downs, no lights in the night, potential danger for women and children of getting mugged or robbed!!

All kinds of hawkers occupying the area below the bridge is another nuisance!!

There is huge (ever increasing/stinking) garbage dump with some buffaloes rummaging on that near the junction of Bantwal byepass road!!

High time the authorities wake up and take remedial measures to alleviate the grievance of the common man!! Jai Hind!!

In 'love' also they are 'pitfalls' and 'potholes' like this in the beginning,I tell those who have 'fallen' in it.
Only if you surpass them , will you get the 'concrete roads' and 'express highway' and your ride will be smooth.
In short 'no gain without pain'.
    First a 'sinking low'-then a 'rising high'.Is it not?

NHAI is a shame. How can you say heavy trucks are to blame. Where the trucks should ply? Lack of quality is the root cause. The big compliments for our road engineers is by auto companies proudly telling "our cars are designed for Indian roads" What a compliment !

The article starts with the development of India but there are people like Jeevan, Shetty, Poojary and other claims since 60 years there was no development. Then the question is who made this development. either this article is misleading the public or telling the truth remains a question mark.

it is very sad that our Govt. is not interested in using technology up gradation in infrastructure. It is very common that contractors use sub-standard material in road construction and blame the rains for deteriorating road conditions. We have technology for CHANDRAYAN but no technology to build good roads that withstand rains. Look at the use of IT by Govt departments. There is an institution called NIC which provides very good web-sites for all Govt. departments. But the departments fail to operate the websites. How can one expect us to develop? The attitude of Government is really shameful.
