German captain Lahm retires from international football

Berlin, July 18 (IANS): Less than a week after winning the FIFA World Cup, Germany captain Philipp Lahm Friday announced his retirement from international football.

Lahm led Germany to a 1-0 win over Argentina in the final at Rio's famed Maracana stadium July 13, for the European country's fourth World Cup triumph.

“During last season I made a decision to end my international career after the World Cup," the Bayern Munich veteran said in an open letter published on the German FA website.

“I shared my decision with Germany coach Joachim Loew at breakfast Monday. I am happy and thankful that the end of my national team career coincided with winning the World Cup in Brazil."

“I have been on holiday for the past three days and here have had the quiet time to mentally come to terms with the end of my national team career. A heartfelt thank you for a wonderful time.”

Lahm, who has made 113 appearances for the German national team, made his international debut in 2004.

The 30-year-old took over the German captaincy from Michael Ballack in 2010.

Lahm, who has a contract with Bayern Munich until 2018, will continue playing club football.
