Benzema records first penalty miss of 2014 FIFA World Cup


Salvador (Brazil), Jun 21 (IANS): After seven successful spot kicks in the FIFA World Cup this year, French striker Karim Benzema earned the distinction of missing the first penalty in their Group E clash against Switzerland at the Arena Fonte Nova here Friday.

In the 33rd minute, Swiss centre-back Johan Djourou tripped Benzema in the box. The Real Madrid forward took the penalty but drew a fine save from Diego Benaglio, who flung himself to the right and made an excellent low save.

France could have still scored but former Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye volleyed his effort over the crossbar with an open goal gaping.

At halftime, France lead Switzerland 3-0 through goals from Olivier Giroud (17th), Blaise Matuidi (18th) and Mathieu Valbuena (40th).
