Merkel wishes Germany well ahead of World Cup opener

Berlin, June 15 (IANS/EFE): German Chancellor Angela Merkel offered her best wishes to the national football team led by coach Joachim Loew ahead of their FIFA World Cup opener against Portugal Monday.

Merkel wished the team before heading to Brazil to attend the match in Salvador and meet Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, reports EFE.

Merkel said in a video message that the team will have the "support and sympathy" of millions of citizens ahead of their Group G clash at the Arena Fonte Nova.

This is the third World Cup Merkel will be attending since she came to power in 2005, a year before the 2006 edition in Germany.
