Mangalore, May 30: Residents who stay at Kaikamba on Mangalore - Moodbidri stretch are forced to inhale the foul smell emanating from the open drainage which flows close to their houses. Visitors and residents are greeted to the stagnant dirty water - formed on both sides of the entrance - in addition to the fact that it has been a breeding house for mosquitos as well.

Mary D’Cunha (75) lives right next to the public drainage but her plea to the authority concerned has gone unheard for years. She says, "We have approached the panchayat umpteen times pleading them to do neccessary work so that the drainage water flows smoothly and it is not left open. But our efforts have not paid off and our complaint has not been taken seriously."

The open drainage flows adjacant to the compounds of several houses. There are huge weeds, which have come up from the sewege channels thus blocking the free flow of drainage water. As a result, it has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and the foul smell greets the passersby.

"There is no proper concrete work done to channelise the contaminated water," says Mary D'Cunha, who is bed-ridden and lives with her daughter.

Her daughter Tracy Rodrigues, who first brought the issue to daijiworld's notice, is concerned that as her mother is old and unwell, the smell and the mosquitoes can further contirubte to her illness. "We have put mesh on our windows but it's not enough," she says. "The hotels and residents have to either stop releasing the drainage water or some other solution has to be implemented seriously."

Jayanthi Poojary, who lives in the neighbourhood, says, "A few residents have spent money from their pocket to construct a concrete sewege line next to their houses, while those who cannot afford it have to bear with this. The drainage water is flowing from the hotels and residential apartments from somewhere else, and we have to bear the brunt."

Tracy Rodrigues feels the administration's assurance to make the district malaria-free is nothing but a gimmick. "If they are not able to take care of the minor root causes, how can they attempt to make Mangalore disease-free?" she points out.

During the election campaign when MLA Mohiuddin Bava came asking for votes the residents had brought this issue to his notice. At that time he had promised to resolve this issue on priority but till now the situation has not changed. "People around this area including the sick and the old are confined to their homes as the mosquitoes and bad smell do not allow them to breath fresh air. They must shut their window and doors and breathe the fan air 24 hours a day," she laments.

When contacted Padmini S Anchan, president of Gurupur panchayat, said, "The place falls under the limits of Kandavar and Gurupur panchayat. We had a joint meeting of three panchayat on May 26, in the presence of Manjula Paramesh, zilla panchayat standing committee president. Afterwards, all of us visited the area for spot inspection. This is a serious issue", she said.

"Before the arrival of monsoons, we will get the JCB to make way for the smooth flow of dirty water, as a temporary solution. In addition to it, we will write a proposal for funds under Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan (NBA), as directed by Manjula Paramesh," she said.

"This is a problem created by the hotel owners and the residents of apartments who have let the drainage water out without making proper arrangements for its smooth flow. Hence, it is affecting other residents," she said.

Indeed it is an eye opener. The local civic body must take immediate action to end this nuisance. What a terrible status to experience!!! It shall not only bother the Residents nearby but affect the environment and health status of entire Place. Kaikamba is growing but not the basic amenities like Drainage, Water Supply etc. The Political Leaders and also Govt Officers must act positively to end this menace!!!

We are living in civilised society and not in the jungle raj. Why has the government machineries failed to resolve the situation. Inspite of 1 MP, 1 MLA, either Gram panchayath / city municipal council members and battery of officers excursively handle its issues. still such problems arises.

The problem lies in the mindset of the people, Govt machineries, health department and planners. Every year we are celebrating world environment day and its mere eye wash to the people. Our constitution provided right to live freely without any social & environmental issues. After 60 years of independence same complaints and same issues. its wake up call to the local administration before getting into serious issues.

Thanks Daijiworld for highlighting this issue. Until recently only rain water used to flow in the area during monsoons, now all year round sewage water flows down the line. Thanks to local Panchayat, it is utter irresponsibility of the local panchayat to allow sewage water to flow on public area, how they can turn blind eye towards local businesses who send their waste water into neighborhood? Don’t they have some accountability? How on earth these local businesses dump their waste water on public area? Don’t they have some social responsibility, moral values and ethics!! I remember during our childhood we used to clean up the public area, let alone dumping waste. What happened to our local youths? Are they busy updating their Facebook profile? There are hue and cry for silly matters!! But for their own living environment can’t they take up such issue and stage a protest in front of local panchayat? There are many active youth clubs in the area, they should have taken up this worthy issue, if panchayat doesn’t do its duty, local clubs should do some voluntary work and make local business pay for their mess, why general public should suffer and inhale smelly air?? I urge local youth clubs to take up this issue and stage a protest. If nothing happens even after few months take the bucket in your hand (not law) collect the sewage water and pour into door steps of panchayat, businesses and their houses!!!

I congratulate daijiworld for highlighting this issue. This issue of open drainage has become a birth right of our corporation and panchayath. The Mangalore corporation has three such outlets, Anegundi Stream, Kadri Temple stream and the Stream behind the NH 17 leading to mahaveer circle.Even after repeated requests of the in and around public to the corporator and the administrative authorities. There is a deaf ear on the Issue for the last 10years. Governance has changed at the state and the national but we the residents are suffering with only the verabal promises. Kindly see the Kadri stream which carries, more than 50 thousand gallons of human waste per day into one of the beautiful open clean water stream of the past. Down the line there are umpteen number of open wells which have been contaminated by this flow for the past 10 yrs. The residents are suffering without knowing the impact of this. Hope at least now the administration will take a note of this and put an end to this menace. The ADP project has done the drainage work, but has left the drains open at one point into the open streams.

Thank you Daijiworld for highlighting the issue so that the authorities atleast now wake up to resolve the same.

The house shown in the picture once belonged to a prominent Bunt community person named Babu and Koraga Kottari. Lot of people used to visit that house especially during Dasara time and the Pili Vesha dancers, now looks like 'Palu bidda Hampi'. The entire vicinity was beautiful with a clear running water during monsoon time but not any more but is replaced by what is shown in the picture. Walking in that area is a nightmare now. To pass by in that area, you will get a very bad smell. Residents of Kaikamba are known to be caring for each other irrespective of cast and creed and Panchayat representative used to look into every detail in the past. Why not now ??.

I do not leave single chance to make fun of my PUC College Busmate (Kaikamba-Bajpe)Raju, who told me some years back, that Panchayat will turn Kaikamha to Mini Singapore !!!. Oooo Raju...

Thank you Daijiworld for publishing this and bringing to the notice of authorities and general public. I am sure there are many such places around Mangalore city and outskirts. If we common people do not take action,no politician will have time to come and observe all these other than concentrating on money making projects.
Our public should learn health, safety and cleanliness and maintain this and also teach their children. I noticed few youngsters bring garbage bags from home in the mornings on their way to work, through them on roadside or outside someone's compound. Basically they want to keep their compound clean and let others take care of their garbage.
Authorities also should provide proper garbage bins or allocated areas for waste disposal, otherwise where would people dispose their daily garbage? If this issue is not attended now, we can very soon see another Bangalore Garbage City in our beautiful Mangalore!

    Dear Daijiworld,
Its indeed a well presented issue of concern to reach out to the plight of some old and common people who are genuinely in need of help. Anti malaria campaigns, upgrade of sewage systems, etc are much publicized but in reality these pictures speak for themselves.

Couple of months back, I had gone there to look for a property and I blindly rejected the site after seeing the open drainage system.  It was a pathetic situation and I wonder how the residents live here. I have been reading about eradicating the root cause of malaria and here we see the authorities are breeding mosquitoes !!! It's high time the authorities take it seriously on this issue.

This is a sad state of affairs that clearly reflects the callous attitude of the authorities. The openly flowing filth is not just harmful to elderly people in the immediate vicinity, but can cause a local epidemic that impacts countless residents of the area.

Yet another forgotten promise by the politicians - can we ever hope that things will change for the better? Authorities, are you listening? We need action, and now. Please!!

With the mushrooming of garages, small eateries, and multitude of building constructions the development of infrastructure to cater to same has been zilch especially the drainage system, garbage clearance, water supply, footpaths, etc. which are of paramount importance for a growing city as the lack of this itself will increase to Goliath proportions in the years to come making it an unwanted city for anyone wishing to set shop here!!

One has to see on the outskirts too in areas like BC Road where huge garbage mounds have been created and all the waste from everywhere is dumped recklessly and a few cattle feeding on them, looks very distressing to see such a degradation from the pristine state it was a few years ago!! In interior villages people just dump garbage including sanitary pads etc. into the water estuaries which once used to carry clean water from the hills to the river and were house to a variety of water life including shrimps, crabs, various types of fish etc., now one even does not feel to have a look at these estuaries as some houses may have even connected their drain pipes to them because of utter lack of enforcement of the law!!

In the years to come Mangluru will have an uphill task tackling water supply, garbage clearance, and nullah water!!

Hope with a change in Govt. there is improvement in all areas before things go totally out of hand!!
    Jai Hind!!

This is just tip of the iceberg go around the city there many places which have become breeding grounds for mosquito ,unless there is something done in a war footing by the authorities dengue ,malaria ..and the rest will hang around ,our public too should take care of their surroundings or at least report to the concerned authority.
