Mangalore, May 26: The district administration is mulling the reallocation of 3.35 acres of land at Bondel, previously earmarked for the construction of a ‘Rang Mandir’ (theatre) by the Kannada and culture department.

The land might now be assigned to the department of youth services and sports (DYSS) which is hoping for the allocation of about 10 acres of land to carve out a stadium on this location.

In 2010, the district administration had allotted 3.35 acres of land to the Kannada and culture department, following which a foundation stone had been laid to build a Rang Mandir by then chief minister B S Yeddyurappa. However, due to some technical reasons, construction work has not been initiated yet.

Meanwhile, the district administration received a proposal from the DYSS to erect a stadium on the same location. “DYSS has approached the district administration in connection to the allocation of land to build a stadium in Bondel,” said Parshwanath, assistant director of fisheries, Mangalore, who now also holds the additional charge of deputy director of DYSS.

“The department is currently hoping for the allocation of 10 acres of land. The talks are under way and nothing has been finalized yet,” he added.

Part of the land, around 7 acres, is with the public works department (PWD). It is learned that PWD has acquired the land to accommodate government quarters.

An official from the Kannada and Culture Department, under condition of anonymity, said the land at Bondel has been earmarked as open space, partly as play ground, and partly for site allotment. MUDA (Mangalore Urban Development Authority) has preserved the right given to the land.

This has thwarted the efforts of constructing a Rang Mandir as many government procedures have to be cleared. The administration is now searching for new land to house a Rang Mandir in Mangalore, said the source.

“MUDA has already given its opinion to the district administration on building a stadium. We have no objection in granting the land to the DYSS to build a stadium,” said Mohammad Nazeer, MUDA commissioner. He added that the authority would issue an NOC (No Objection Certificate) for this.

Deputy commissioner, A B Ibrahim speaking to daijiworld said, the decision to grant the land to DYSS has not been taken yet. The KSCA (Karnataka State Cricket Association) has also approached in connection to bring out a stadium in Mangalore. "We are searching new land for Rang Mandir," he added.

This is good news. A new stadium for our young boys and girls. It should be a multi purpose stadium so that there will be sports & games action at the stadium throughout the year. Also outstation teams should be able to stay there at the stadium if they come for any tournaments. The Government should build basic rooms with good facilities including a restaurant so that the sports lovers will welcome such a facility. It is high time to give our youngsters a worthy place to practice their favourite sports. There should also be a running track apart from indoor courts for badminton, volleyball etc. This is the right time for the Sports Department to complete the project quickly and make the D.K. people happy.

I feel area of less than 10 acres is not at all suitable for a stadium if you are thinking of having a modern full pledged stadium with all facilities including ample parking. A minimum of 25 acres is a must. A stadium at the outskirts of city is ideal. This helps not to cause traffic chaos during big events. So my suggestion is acquire a wast level land at outskirts, develop the same like a sports city with cricket ground, football ground, hockey ground and many more with proper planning. But has anybody got such long term vision of developing sports?

    Surely a 'Rang Birangi' tale
relating to a proposed 'Rang Mandir'! Lots of 'Kapata Nataka Suthradahris' who played important roles by applying Rang (Banna) and
    drinking Bhang!
Therefore did not take long for Ranga to become Bhanga!
You build a stadium and you will add a different dimension of 'Rang'
to it every evenings,if the history of Stadiums in Mangalore is anything to go by!

There are enough theaters. Need of the hour is a good stadium to Mangalore aprt from few parks though small. Existing parks are poorly maintained. Need a good system to maintain public properties.

Look at fate of these projects.... Rang Mandir is a wonderful concept for cultural activities but instead of setting up a center where there s ample opportunity to cultivate art n culture, the authorities concerned are earmarking such a prime land for building a stadium... As Moideen bava himself a cricket team owner might be working behind the scene to build cricket stadium here in mlr. The fate of most of programmes during BJP regime limited to inauguration purpose, none of the projects saw light of the day.

Cricket as we knw has kept majority of our youth enslaved. Youths are not workin towards building careers, instead loose focus by watchinn criclket alll time. I dont have any problem if someone wants to play cricket. Let him or her aim to make career in cricket, but what rest youth doin ? just not studying for their final exams too if cricket match is shown live on tv. CRicket is one sport that has spoiled many youths in INDIA like drugs harm us. Modi shud think of saving these youths from getting enslaved with cricket mania. SOme shrewed businessmen like mallya make money out of cricket bcz cricket has made entire country mad. Why not make money by providing entertainment that can even end up causing serious damage to students ?

I sincerely hope that there can be any open ground for other sports purposes tht enhance our youths abilities ... but dont make cricket attractive anymore... we already suffered from Britishers, not their gifts like cricket spoiling many.... some by playing cricket and some getting spoiled by watching it. Side effects such as a gambling has added new dimension to cricket..

i am from bondel and i play football along with my friends every evening in this ground.. cricket stadium is not at all required.. enough of making publicity of cricket.. its time to make football famous.. India has a International cricket team and football????? Why dont you ppl give preference to football? what is the problem?? in 'FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking' india stands in 147th position and its a shame.. Why dont these big actors come up with football league just like IPL...??
