Udupi, Mar 20: More than 50 chickens were poisoned to death by two persons to settle a personal score with a chicken stall owner at Kodibettu near Hiriadka here on Saturady March 18 night.

The Hiriadka police have arrested Shankar, a resident of Pernankila in this regard.  The second accused Praveen Kulal, son of Shankar Kulal of Varvady is still at large.

The accused had mixed Paradon poison in the food given to the chickens with a help of a pipe after cutting open the mesh in the poultry.  More than 50 chickens which consumed poisoned food died.

The incident came to light only on Sunday March 19 morning when the poultry owner Krishna Kulal opened the shop.  He immediately lodged a complaint with the Hiriadka police who were able to arrest Shankar.  However, the second accused Praveen Kulal managed to escape.

Initial investigation revealed that Praveen had some personal score to settle with Krishna Kulal.  So he took the help of Shankar to kill the chickens.  The police sources said that Praveen is the main accused in vehicle lifting cases in the area.  He was even arrested by Manipal police a month ago in this regard.

This had led him to presume that Krishna Kulal had tipped off the police about the vehicle lifting.  So he was waiting for an opportunity to take revenge on Krishna Kulal.

The 'Bird Flu' which is on a prowl in some parts of the country laid a nice platform for him to carry out his mission.  His plan was that Krishna would presume that chickens had died owing to "Bird Flu".  But Krishna who had suspected some foul play in this episode lodged complaint with the police.
