End of an era: Sachin Tendulkar to retire from test cricket after 200th game

Daijiworld Media Network - Sports

Mumbai, Oct 10: Finally, the long-standing debate on Sachin Tendulkar's retirement has come to an end. The legend, 'God of Cricket' has himself disclosed to BCCI on Thusday October 10 that he would hang up his boots soon after playing the 200th test match against West Indies in Mumbai in December this year.

BCCI president N Srinivasan has confirmed to media that the cricket board received a call from Sachin Tendulkar to convey his decision.

BCCI has in a press release to media announced that Sachin Tendulkar would retire from test cricket. Sachin has already retired from ODIs and IPL and other form of T20 cricket.

Tendulkar stated in the press release, "All my life, I have had a dream of playing cricket for India. I have been living this dream every day for the last 24 years. It's hard for me to imagine a life without playing cricket because it's all I have ever done since I was 11 years old. It's been a huge honour to have represented my country and played all over the world. I look forward to playing my 200th Test Match on home soil, as I call it a day.

I thank the BCCI for everything over the years and for permitting me to move on when my heart feels it's time! I thank my family for their patience and understanding. Most of all, I thank my fans and well-wishers who through their prayers and wishes have given me the strength to go out and perform at my best."

Tendulkar's last Twenty20 match was the Champions League T20 final where his team Mumbai Indians beat Rajasthan Royals to win the title.

BCCI president Narayaswami Srinivasan paid rich tributes to Tendulkar.

"I have been an ardent follower and admirer of Sachin Tendulkar from the days he came to play Buchi Babu in Chennai. He is without doubt the greatest cricketer India has produced. In fact, one should really say he ranks among the top of all-time great sports persons in the world," he said.

Srinivasan said Tendulkar has been a true ambassador of Indian cricket.

"No one has served Indian cricket as Sachin has. He has truly been an ambassador for India and Indian cricket. He has been an inspiration for generations of sportsmen not just cricketers. We respect his decision to retire although many of us can't imagine an Indian team without Sachin," he said.

The final match of the two-Test series against the West Indies starting Nov 14 will be Tendulkar's last. The match could be hosted in Tendulkar's home town Mumbai. The first Test is slated for Nov 6.

Cricketing world salutes Sachin

New Delhi, Oct 10 (IANS):
Current and former cricketers from all around the world saluted the achievements of Sachin Tendulkar after it was announced that the batting legend's 200th Test would be his last, ending his phenomenal career in all forms of international cricket.

"It is a sad day for Indian world cricket. But it is the right decision. It is loss for Test cricket in general. The commitment he has shown all these years is incredible. The amazing fact that he has been the same humble boy after achieving so much. I wish him well," World Cup winning Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga said.

Renowned umpire Dickie Bird said Tendulkar was the closest to how Don Bradman played.

"He was the nearest to play like Bradman. I cannot pay a higher compliment than that. I remember he played for Yorkshire at a very young age. He is one of all the time greats and someone who gave a lot of excitement to fans all around the world," said the Yorkshireman.

Asked what stood out about the master blaster, Bird said: "He picked line and length very quickly, let the ball come to him and played late. I could see he would make all sorts of records."

Krishnamachari Srikkanth, who was Tendulkar's first captain in 1989 when India toured Pakistan, was shocked at the news.

"It is shocking that he will stop playing. Imagine a man who has played close to 200 Tests and scored 100 international hundreds. It is just incredible," said Srikkanth adding that Tendulkar's decision had nothing to do with his form.

Former Indian batsman Dilip Vengsarjar said: "He dominated bowlers in all part of the world. His record will be very difficult to beat."

The breaking news also had the Twitter world abuzz.

"One of the Greatest ever @sachin_rt is retiring... One of my heroes and a absolute joy to play against.. #BornToPlayCricket," wrote former England captain Michael Vaughan.

"Dean jones: Sachin Tendulkar is retiring from cricket on his 200 th Test v Windies #whataplayer," said former Australia batsman Dean Jones.

His compatriot Tom Moody said: "Time waits for know one as #Tendulkar prepares to say goodbye, been a privilege to play & coach against the little master one of the greats!"

"Privileged to have seen a child prodigy go on to become a true legend of the game from very close quarters. All the best Sachin," said his former India teammate Sanjay Manjrekar.

    @lavin Noronha,
ha ha..... Can see how much you have seen of sachin to comment in such a wayr... I’l remind you a few innings, hope u rembr them... to strt with the first century he made in test against england 1990 which was a match saving one.. sharjah series against australia 1998.. cb series 07-08 against australia, world cup 2003 except fr in the finals almost evry other league matches.finals of Titan cup asia cup wills world series. NZ series ... chennai test against england... autralia tour of india, india tour of aus, pak, west indies,srilanka..... There are lot of them man, ignorant people like you cant appreciate for what he has done but rather find peace in commenting on his failures. Cricket is a team game and if one fails doesnt mean he has let down the team. Its the team effort that matters. No use explaining to people like you what sachin's worth is. As i said minded people who have watched him playing from the start, the team mates he played along with the pressure of expectations he had from millions will really salute the man and acknowledge what he has done for indian cricket and the younger generation through his game....

Many youths have failed in their academics and unable to pursue good careers. Cricket has spoiled many youngsters for sure. It is the biggest killer of TIME. I students do not focus much on cricket for their own good. If cricket doesnt feed u in long run, then do not watch cricket. Let old people n unemployed watch it.

It is true that Sachin is Legend in Cricket. After retirement let him concentrate on charity just like Australian Cricketers do.
Indians are famous for worshiping Idols and Icons raising the people to Godhood at slightest achievement. That is why India has so many God-men. But ensure that this devotion will jot pass on to his next generation and make Sachin's son Arjun also God and give him undue preference and bring him in national Cricket. Please note that Talents never pass on from father to son. Gavaskar, Shrikant, Brijesh Patel have tried their best to push their Sons in Test arena but failed miserably.

That was too harsh on Sachin. You are definitely with a very short memory. There were hundreds of matches where Sachin has single handedly won matches for India. And most of the cases were where Sachin made very difficult matches cakewalks. And a few matches where Sachin hit Century and others could not go on to win it for us. An era of his presence itself has been such glorious.

He has systamatically phased out - first from Twenty20, then ODI and then 5 day matches.Surely, he is not as good as he was in the 90s, but he was a n inspiration ot the yougsters in the field. He was their guide and coach and his mere presence was sufficient for the rest of the team. He was not arrogant when he was in full form. Once he went to the dressing room of Bangladesh and gave them some good advise and assured them that they would do better in future. I am sure the stadium will be full for his final match.

I think Sachin is the only cricketer in India who commanded the BCCI against laying him off because of his own influence he created from his unmatched cricket. The BCCI never had guts to ask him to step down despite going through a poor form. He always said that he would retire when he thinks it is appropriate. He never said that he would play as long as country wants him. Though he should have retired earlier without waiting for the landmark of 200 tests because of his poor form, the BCCI always put his interest first than the interest of the country. Even Sehwag was laid off unceremoniously a few times despite his powerful batting with two triple centuries, one near triple century, lots of double and 150 plus scores, one-day like strike rate in test cricket and 50 plus average.
Apart from his poor form at the end of his career, it was his relentless and colorful career over two decades that has entertained not only the Indians but the cricket-lovers all over the world. I admire him for his soft manners, who never showed his descent in the field and was always India’s ambassador through cricket. He truly is a legend and I wish him all the best.

Sachin having played for 24 years in almost every game will eventually amass runs. Sachin was fortunate to be bestwed with good physical fitness that sustained him for 24 years with hardwork n practice. When it comes to greatness and being a legend in cricket, there are still debates.. and no one unanimously would point to single cricketer to be greatest except Sir Don. We cannot compare cricketers of different generations for greatness, but forget about greatness in world scenario among contemporary cricketers, couple of cricketers are in debate for occupying legendary status in India itself. Sachin doesnt even emerge as numero uno legend from India as there are gems like Dravid, G.Vishwanath, Gavaskar and Kapil - all are great in their own respect/quality.

Sachin offcourse has produced runs and a class crickerter. But test cricket has some yardsticks that one has to fullfil to be a great cricketer. Patience, tolerance, concentration, dedication, persistence, practice on daily basis, eager to learn, aggression, calmness, trying to produce best out of self, contribution to winning, ability to adapt and play in any conditions and in any order, ability to play fast, spin, bounce etc,... will all count.... and the only name that suits to this tag is Rahul Dravid from India. And in world stage I would go for Brian Lara Jaques Kallis. Double/tripple centuries along with number of mathces won will count in being great. Sachin despite scoring world record runs will not suit to be a legend from India.

Have been watching sachin playing since childhood. Cant forget the memories he has given us.... A decade ago this same sachin was a hero for some of the readers here who feel he was selfish who just thought about the centuries and blah blah. Come on guys he has given us so much happiness to the entire nation. give credit for what he has done for Indian cricket. Most of the younger players watched his success and aspired to become a cricketer. Still remembr the times when sachin used to get out, all of us switchd off the television sets thinking we' lose the match. He was all our hope. so what if he has played so many matches and made centuries , it hasn't come in 1 or 2 years he has worked hard for it.

Some of them will say his win % percentage is very lesss when comapred to lara ponting dhoni etc but u guys need to check out the stats and the era in which sachin has played and the quality of the bowlers and the team mates he had during his playing tenure. decade back indian team was no where near to where our current young team is. And some buggers also feel that if anyone plays for 24 yrs he’l achieve what sachin has.. the point is can anyone play so long??.. that’s the point ….The biggest problem with all who hate sachin is that they expect too much out of him. 2003 world cup I guess everyone will rembr the performance he had given, just coz he failed in the final there were so many harsh comments passed that he doesn’t perform in the finals.. I mean its such a sick thought. Was he the only person in the team. Forget it guys I can write pages and pages of such instances. No cricketer has ever contributed the way sachin as.. Minded people will appreciate and respect him for what he has done… Will really miss u sachin.

The greatest ever without doubt...people may have hundred reasons to refute and thousands reasons to criticize him...but I have thousands reasons to appreciate this man....he is an epitome of consistency, commitment, passion and love for cricket..a few may leave him behind in statistics but no one ever will be ever to overtake Tendulkar, the complete package, on and off-field...no one ever can surpass him...down-to-earth...can't imagine a person remaining in spotlight for 24 years without courting even single controversy on and off-the field....words won't suffice to express my appreciation for him...first Rahul and now Sachin...

Indian cricket will not be the same anymore and I will perhaps never watch it with same zeal and passion anymore...the sports world never had such a role model across the continents and in any sports perhaps...India rose with Sachin and when he got out, India sank in dismay, not once but everytime he was on the park...beyond the records, beyond the statistics, beyond his longevity and beyond his unblemished career, there lies a perfect human being, a true gentleman who could be emulated not just by cricketers but by everyone, albeit the profession...take a bow my greatest hero ever...

Sachin no doubt you are an good and gentleman cricketer, but i always admire the players like Lara, Dravid more who were always there for the team when required. Sachin has made so many centuries which is really an great, but at the same time there were only a few of the matches where he played under pressure. That too there are only a few matches where he played while batting second which is definately not that great in his 24 years long cricketing carrier. Anyways all the best for your future.

200 x 5 = 1000 days. He played 1000 days of test cricket. In fact 1000-100 = 900, because some test matches will end in 4 days others delay due due to rain, day light etc. Imagine the legacy .. Sachin is great in all sense.

When Sachin Tendulkar travelled to Pakistan to face one of the finest bowling attacks ever assembled in cricket, Michael Schumacher was yet to race a F1 car, Lance Armstrong had never been to the Tour de France, Diego Maradona was still the captain of a world champion Argentina team, Pete Sampras had never won a Grand Slam.

When Tendulkar embarked on a glorious career taming Imran and company, Roger Federer was a name unheard of, Lionel Messi was in his nappies, Usain Bolt was an unknown kid in the Jamaican backwaters.

We have had champions, we have had legends, but we have never had another Sachin Tendulkar and we never will...

Sachin Tendulkar greater than Don Bradman. One thing we liked him the most he do have head-weight. A simple Guy..not involved in any politics. Waiting for 'Bharat Ratna'..to Sir Sachin Tendulkar.. Jai Ho..

Good news for Indian cricket. When a player is out of form after palying more than 100 test should retire immediately to make way to younger players. No doubt Tendulkar is one of the greatest cricketer ever the world seen and every player has a time to hang his/her boot.

Right decision. He has done a lot for Indian cricket, but none can fight age and all good things have to come to an end. It was sad to see him struggling over the past year and a lot of people abusing him for sticking around. Let him always be remembered as the greatest cricketer that India has produced and among the top three greatest of all time.

Dhoni is the only one who is exceptional case. When Sachin started his career for long Indian team was depend on him a lot. He had to open the innings and billion people expected him to finish the match. What sachin is given to us, the indians, no other cricketer has given.

Actually he should have retired last year, when he was showing the signs of loosing the form/grip.
He prolonged his decision only for public. Poor guy, started playing
for the country at the age of 16.!!
Great cricketer, may God give him
good health till his last breath.
    Salute him.

"Not long back it seems in cricket, a kid who started his career..
He didn’t start off very well, but in him, legends saw a warrior..
He was challenged, was put to tests, and strongly he came..
We call him Sachin, and the world remembers the name"
Sachin we love u and we will miss u in cricket field.
