BAI disciplinary committee recommends life ban for Jwala

New Delhi, Oct 6 (IANS): The Badminton Association of India (BAI)'s disciplinary committee has recommended a life ban for leading doubles player Jwala Gutta for her conduct during an Indian Badminton League (IBL) tie in Bangalore Aug 25.

The 30-year-old, however, can be pardoned if she gives an unconditional apology to BAI president Akhilesh Das Gupta.

"We have recommended a life ban on Jwala for her role in the Krrish Delhi Smashers vs Banga Beats tie. Nowehere in Jwala's reply which she sent to us, is she apologetic for her conduct. So we recommended the ban," BAI's disciplinary committee chairman S. Muralidharan told IANS Saturday.

"However, if she offers an unconditional apology to the president, then she can be pardoned. It is upon the discretion of the president to decide now," Muralidharan, also a BAI vice-president, added.

The Krrish Delhi Smashers, led by icon player Jwala, threatened to forfeit a tie when the Banga Beats tried to replace an injured singles player Hu Yun with Jan O Jorgensen in the eleventh hour.

The Smashers had protested despite the IBL governing council's go-ahead. Only after the Beats decided to leave out O Jorgensen and play Arvind Bhat instead, did Delhi agree to continue, delaying the tie by half an hour.

Following that, the 2011 World Championship women's doubles bronze medallist was given a show-cause notice in early September and was asked to explain her conduct.

BAI's executive council had appointed a retired high court judge to investigate the incident.

Don't kill the players. Whatever happens, it is the responsibility of all associations to take care of their players who are responsible for the overall success and progress. The Badminton Association of India's disciplinary committee seems to be in a hurry to announce a life ban for India's star player Jwala for a minor reason most of which may not be due to her. Jwala is a strong and fiery character by nature and the BAI has to counsel her and groom her to change her attitude. By giving a life ban, Jwala will be lost as far as Indian Badminton goes. Please warn her or may be give her a ban for a season. Both BAI and Jwala have to offer plenty and by destroying Jwala's career a quality player will be gone for good. Jwala will not take it lying down knowing her combative background. Help Jwala to progress rather than pushing her out of the badminton court. BAI should behave like a father figure and protect the girl. Hope common sense prevails rather than brute authority which is uncalled for.

Very true. Games like tennis, badminton are individual oriented. If one player gone is like one team gone. They should not do it. That too life ban for indiscipline?!!! I have never heard this in any sports or game. It is just ego problem with game management. Let them give her warning or cut from her package amount or a limited ban like 2 tournaments or 1 year etc. But life ban is just not justifiable. It sounds funny when they say "if she apologizes they will pardon?". It shows only the level of ego. If the fault is of that nature to get life ban, how can an apology turn it around? It shows the mistake is not that grave to call for life ban. Life ban should be on those who recommended the ban and trying to kill the sporting talent in India.
