Mangalore, Mar 7: Officials of the departments of Animal Husbandry and Health are inspecting farms and chicken outlets in the district, gathering information about bird deaths and conducting tests on dead chickens, said Ashok Kumar, assistant director (Poultry). 

Denying reports that there have been bird deaths in Dakshina Kannada district, he informed that birds can die of chronic respiratory disease, Ranikhet disease, Infectious Bursal Disease or food poisoning, and do not cause any harm to humans. 

He added that poultry farmers and shop keepers have been instructed to immediately inform about bird deaths. The department is also keeping an eye on unnatural death of birds and vigilance units on the Kerala border are on a watch, he said.

No chicken in the district has been afflicted with the H5N1 virus, he said.
