Bangalore, Mar 7: According to moderate estimate, more than five thousand people assembled at Christ the King Church, Malleshwaram here to pay their final respects to philanthropist-entrepreneur A V Rego on the evening of Monday, March 6. Since a large number of people visited the mourners' residence as well as the cemetery direct, the exact number could not guessed.
Archbishop Bernard Moras of Bangalore offered the Requiem Mass, concelebrated by another 35 priests. A large number of religious were also present.
On behalf of the Konkani Catholic community, well-known Konkani writer Vally Vagga gave a very touching eulogy.
Speaking to Daijiworld, Abraham Bosco, chairman of the south Asian territory of Toastmasters International, said the city's who-is-who almost attended the funeral. He said it was a funeral which had the largest-ever attendance in the area. Everyone who had been touched by the late A V Rego, by way of his social service, business association, magnanimity and whatever way he could, was present to pay homage to him, he added.
The whole locality was jam-packed said a government official, with practically no place to move around. Many persons who attended told our correspondent that they had not seen such a gathering at a funeral in recent years.
