Udupi, Mar 5: “Eat chicken without fear.”

In order to pass on this message to the people who are panic-stricken due to the bird flu menace, the Dakshina Kannada District Poultry Farmers' Association, National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) and the veterinary departments of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have organized a Chicken Festival on the Malpe Beach here on Sunday March 5.

Free chicken will be served to the people to create awareness that it is safe to consume chicken and eggs.

Briefing the press on the same, assistant director of the Department of Animal Husbandry Shivakumar said the festival will be held between 5.30 pm and 6.30 pm.

There are around 500 broiler farms and eight layer farms in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts with a total capacity of around 11.1 lac broilers and 1.7 lac layer birds. However no cases of avian influenza have been reported so far, informed deputy general manager Venkateshwar Hatcheries Harsha Kumar Shetty.

The Chicken Festival will be organized with assistance from major hatcheries of the district including Souza Hatcheries, Coastal Hatcheries, Universal Hatcheries, Raison Breeders and the poultry farmers of Mangalore, Udupi and Kundapur and will be inaugurated by minister for animal husbandry and medical education Dr V S Acharya.
