Algeria beat Mali ahead of World Cup play-offs


Algiers, Sep 11 (IANS): Algeria beat Mali 1-0 for the final 2014 World Cup African qualifying second round group game, in Blida Stadium, 50 km southern the capital Algiers.

Hillal Soudani scored the lone goal (50th minute) to provide his team a win Tuesday night that put them seven points clear of Mali and Benin at the top of Group H with 15 points, reports Xinhua.

The Bosnian coach of Algeria, Vahid Halilhodzic, is intent on qualifying for the second time in a row for the World Cup.

Algeria is placed at level one with Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria and Cape Verde, in accordance with FIFA rankings.

Level two comprises five other teams, namely Egypt, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Senegal and Ethiopia.

For now, Algeria will learn their next opponent in the deciding two-legged knockout, after the draw that would be conducted by the African Football Confederation (CAF) Sep 16.
