Mangalore: Thousands in Niddodi go on hunger strike against power project

Lionel Pinto / Sunil Haleangady
Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Jul 28: Over a thousand people gathered at Niddodi junction here on Sunday July 28 under the leadership of Matrubhoomi Horata Samiti and launched a hunger strike against the setting up of 4,000-MW ultra mega power plant proposed by the central and the state governments.

The hunger strike began at 6 am, and despite heavy rains people actively participated in thousands to vent their anger and protest against the thermal power plant.

Speaking to Daijiworld, Alphonse D'Souza, president of Matrubhoomi Horata Samiti, said, "Only 800 acre of government land is availabe in this area and the government is planning to implement this mega power project on 4,000 acres of land, by acquiring the remaining land through KIADB. This will affect the villages of Niddodi, Tenka Mijar, Badaga Mijar, Kallamundkur, Muchur, Neerude, Puttige, Kateel, Mennabettu and Kinnigoli where people rely on agriculture for their livelihood. This project will not only distroy the fertile land and soil but also have a great impact on people's and animals' health.

"We have already seen the effect of Nandikoor power plant (UPCL) which is producing 1,000-megawatt of power. The power plant the government is planning to start here is four times bigger in terms of power generation. Even though high-level talks have been going on to start the project as early as possible, neither the government nor the officials of KIADB who are acquiring the land for the project or our political leaders are giving a clear cut picture about the project," he said.

"A team of officials from the central government came here on May 16 to conduct survey for the project, but we villagers strongly protested and sent the team back. The government has shown this land as a barren land in the records, whereas in reality this area is a green belt area and people's main occupation is agriculture. Thus the government is forcibly trying to bring this project over here without taking the locals into confidence. We will not allow the government to start this project here at any cost. We are ready to sacrifice our life for our land," he declared.

Many organizations have supported the hunger strike, including Dakshina Kannada district farmers' rights forum. The hunger strike will continue till 6 pm.

The protestors also wrote postcards addressing the chief minister, in which they expressed strong opposition to the project and demanded its withdrawal. The postcards will be sent to CM Siddaramaiah.

Hasiru Sene district convener Dayanada Shetty, convener of Apna Desh Sheik Abdulla, Consumers' Forum president T N Ramesh, district farmers' association secretary Manohar Shetty, president Rohithaksha, local gram panchayat president Joachim Tauro, members and heads of Mathrubhoomi Samrakshana Horata Samiti, few political representatives, people from Mulky, Moodbidri, Gurpur and other parts took part in the protest.

What you said is a fact.
In all these kind of projects, when the Govt. or any other interested party makes known their intention of starting the project where land acquisition is necessary - some politician\influential person will organise such opposition, using the locals. Meantime he is also in dialogue with the project owner\contractor and has relayed his requirement to call off the agitation so the delay to start the project will not be there . Once the amount is paid, the politician\influencial person and cronies withdraw from the strike, leaving the poor residents leaderless to continue the strike. The resistance slowly wanes.
Even in Niddodi same thing will happen. I wonder, in Niddodi, if there are people strong enough to counter the above by themselves.
Find out who called\ put this idea of hunger strike, to the residents of Niddodi.

Mr.Ramchandra Kini, Let Industry / business and development be hit. We want our beloved Niddodi lands to stay with us. Shift the project to Deralakatte / Konaje / Merlapadavu / Vamanjur / Kenjar instead. There are no fertile lands in these areas and it is within 25 kms of the port.

One frank and straight question : Do we want power cuts or no power ? Do we want Industry and development to suffer ?

Acquisition of land is in State and national interest. In Karwar the fishermen gave up their lands for a Naval base. In Mangalore people are giving up residential land for road widening. In Bajpe people gave up their farm land for the new Airport / MRPL. So what is the big hue and cry for ? NIDDODI is the right place as for logistics are concerned. Since coal is imported from Indonesia and Australia ( low sulpher content ),Niddodi is close to the port. A thermal power plant needs 20-40,000 tonnes of coal daily.

The problem is it is being planned on a very fertile land . the ecosystem is very fragile . already due to UPCL there has been a lot of damage due to smog , hot atmosphere , sulphur release , hot water discharge . this is spoiling the coastal districts .

Only the people residing there will understand . how many of you would like to have thermal plants near your houses and expose your children and families harmful soot and smog and acid rain .

I am writing this in general terms as concerned Indian Citizen not directly with reference to Niddodi Project. We citizens complain constantly about power cuts, Industry suffers and the complaints never end. But whenever a project is launched, whether power or infrastructure, immediately opposition to the project starts from various bodies, environmental and so on. We oppose Nuclear,Hydro or thermal. Can the opposing organization explain how government can produce power and distribute? We compare ourselves with China. China develops because these protests are not tolerated. I am not justifying Communist rule, but we should not abuse the democracy and put obstacles for development of the country. Need of the hour is not hunger strike but dialogue, rehabilitation of affected families and compensation. There is always price to pay for the development. Country leaders cannot do miracles and produce power from NOTHING.

With all due respects to Mr. D. Poojary
Feb 24, 2013 - It was J. Shettar, then CM informed Union Power Minister J. Scindia, urging him Niddodi as a suitable location for the 4000MW power project as that location is near to Mangalore port etc. as well power generated can be transmitted through the existing power lines of Nandikor\Udupi power plant, unlike Tadadi which was mammoth task for such power transmission.
Harsh language, by some, is uncalled for without getting the facts right.
After all whether Cong.\BJP\JDS or any followers, we Indians\Karnataka(ians)need this additional Power for domestic as well for Industry.
If we have this additional Power, many industries will crop up generating jobs locally.
Without problems there can not be projects implemented. Pople have to bear the brunt for better prospects for the future generation.

Rakesh Shetty had said: Hats off to BJP Govt. Jai Ho
    D. Poojary : Power project is most welcome. it will generate employment to locals Etc. (shettar letter to Rail minister for separate Divi. for Mangalore etc.)
and so on by others too.
Any good thinking, even though Govt changes, it should not change.

Important here is to urge the Government to make arrangements to bring down\control the pollution and make proper facility for dumping fly ash far away. (not to dump on the roads etc.)

have a good day gentlemen of all political parties.

These type of hunger strike of one day will have no effect on the government as its skin is very thick.
Among priorities for the protest one imporatnt demand should be added ie.,demand for creation of seperate Tulunaadu state caving out of Udupi,Dakshina Kannada dists to preserve the rich Tulunaadu hereitage and get rid of jealous and biased ruling by upper Ghat people.

    Friends,
Coastal Karnataka is one of the green belts still surviving onslaught of indiscriminate development of land and we should make all efforts to preserve it.
Also Electrical Power generation is the need of hour for all of us and the nation.
Thermal power Plant consumes coal and water to generate power and
Ash and flue gases are the undesirable end products of a Coal based thermal PP. Coal is not locally available while water level in South Kanara has been continuously depleting. Hence Thermal Power Plant is not at all desirable particularly in the green belt of coastal Karnataka.
We should protest all processes which adversely affect the soil quality and air pollution in our Parashurama Shrishti.
Power plants generate employment, and trigger other peripheral economic activities and thus add to the economics of our district.
Hence, instead of protesting any Power Plant in outright manner, we should campaign for Solar & wind Power based Power generation which are environmentally sustainable process and thus also can secure the abundant natural beauty of South Kanara.

My full support to Matrubhoomi Horata Samiti. Let us not forget that United We Stand, otherwise we don't have any chance against the mighty coal lobby and the corrupt elected politicians. In May 2012, Orissa High Court ordered to stop thermal power plan in Orissa. In 2008, proposed 1000 MW ( not even 4000 MW)thermal power plant in Chamalapura (Mysore Distr) was cancelled following the opposition from local residents. May be because of the local opposition, the Govt. has not even bothered to have any public hearing before sanctioning this mega burning hell on earth plant in Niddodi. Official word is that, (Niddodi is very convenient place." If that is the case, when the officials are thirsty, they should just scoop up muddy water from the ground outside (very convenient) and drink withouth worrying about health hazards!
Here are some of the contact informations to get international help to protect us from our own elected (!) officials. Everyone should e-mail to these organizations to let the outside world know the atrocities and corruption of the Got. officials: UNITED NATIONS ENVIRONMENT PROGRAMME, ASIA PACIFIC REGION: uneproap@un.org

The pictures tell the whole story. People - men and women - are protesting. They do not want this project to come up in Noddodi. Neither do I nor do the thousands of people who care about the environment. Certainly the project will have rious consequences on the environment of the region. The government must respect the feelings of the people who voted them to power. The politicians should remember that they are the servants of the people who elected them and not their masters. They should do what is good for the people and the region and not play around with the feelings of the people. I do not care which party or the government has approved this project or who sanctioned it. What we know is if this project is approved and comes up, the palms of several politicians will be greased or might have already been greased. That is why no politician is opening his mouth. People like Abhaychandra Jain and Nalin Kumar Kateel squeaked initially in public and shed some crocodile tears as well. Not much commonsense is needed to surmise that those squeaks have now been buried under the bundles of notes they must have been given. Do we need such selfish so called leaders at all who are impervious to the feelings of those who voted them to power? There is another so called leader who has thrown up his hands in helplessness saying he cannot do anything to stop the diversion of the Nethravathi when experts have warned us of the consequences if this is done. Why the hell do we fight among ourselves when elections are announced? When are we going to realise that these politicians enter politics with the sole intention of feathering their own nests and not for the people? Believe me, nothing is going to come out of this protest unless all the people unite and force the politicians against imposing this project in Niddodi. I have a suggestion. Everybody should donate a rupee each and send the money to the CM and ask him to distribute it among those who approved this project.

Everybody seems to be talking of fertile land and blah, blah.

All the "farmers" here, who are complaining, are talking like as if their children will become future "raithas". Many of these farmers have educated children working in gulf, bangalore, etc. Why???? Why are their children not working in the farmlands of niddodi...?

The answer is farming in india seriously does not pay! At least not the way it is now, and it will not pay, until you remove the middlemen - who make the most profits by buying low from farmers, and selling high to retailers. Remove all the small grocery store owners, and other unorganised retail outlests, and let multi-national distribution companies bring in their FDI with state of art supply-chain management, and run the food business professionally, and make it an organized food sector. These companies will pay the maximum for the farmers produce. Now even Walmart is thinking twice about coming into India, thanks to all these agitations everywhere, esp. instigated by BJP! BJP's voter base hangs with the banias who are mostly middlemen in business and they do not want multi-national companies to come to india, because they will lose out.

A progress of a nation is based upon its capacity to help create jobs within the economy. Having a "santhe" every week, and small grocery store owners selling fresh produce in an unorganized business segment is not going to help india have a sustainable economic growth. What india needs is to eliminate the middleman from most businesses and build its infrastructure in power, water, roads etc so that more companies come into india and our youth get jobs. Otherwise you will find the youths loitering with mundu in Bajrang dal, SRS, and other political outfits creating trouble on silly issues, because of their own frustrations.

    Dear Brother,
Before talking anything on this matter first you should know you are eating rise which is grown in the farms of farmers like us and not the power which is produced by any of the power plants. In future nothing will be there to eat if you desert the fertile lands no electricity can be eaten. Try to visit the area once, it is at such a height that the ash which spreads from it can reach even to western ghats which is older than Himalayas and consists rarest animal and plant species. The proposed site is so near to Nagarjun plant that one can see two towers of Nagarjun plant from this site, also already we farmers have lost our lands for various projects such as MRPL, Mangalore export zone, MSEZ and many more how can one sitting there in Bangalore and wasting the food what we grow can understand the difficulty what we face here? Finally, if it is not for the greed of some people (wasting the power in city malls) there will not be a necessity of occupying our lands for this kind of power projects. Being the one who lives on what we grow, I don't understand why you city people speak against us.

People of coastal karnataka have seen the results from Nagarjuna. Though power is produced its been sent to bangalore. Similarly this NIddodi power project power will be sent to Hassan and people of DK have to be in dark areas again.

Niddodi is a greenery village where most of them rely on farming. We dont want this project. Let them do in bidar, gulbarga side where they r in need of power.

Also frens, in order to construct this project they need 5 tmc of water. Imagine 5 tmc of water, they will make all the rivers of DK empty. Also now they are planning for nethravathi nadi tiruvu yojane. Lets all stop this and save or land.

    Well said KS D'silva,

it is easy to sit in the office and comment saying we need the projects. when it comes to your home you will realise the pain to vacate your house and sacrifice your property.

people should be united and oppose this and elected representatives shoudl support the locals irrespective of their party.

this is a call to save our nature.

we don't want development at the cost of destroying the nature.

Padubidir power plant should be an eye opener for those who support this project.

Friends you are on strike, so can you put forward a solution to resolve the power deficit. The food saved through your hunger strike can be used feed the hungry.... so go ahead continue it for as long as you want. Wake up!! go on strike for the right cause...corruption in politics, criminal elements in politics, good civic amenities ( sewage & garbage disposal, repair of pot holes on roads, lack of drinking water supply etc ) & the list can go on. My personal advice don't be fooled by politicians with vested interests. Think and think hard before you react.

1.Shri Pejawara Swamiji must take serious decision in this case.He should take support from other community leaders and fight against Power Project. This is the time where religious leaders show their real power to people..
2.Public should put pressure on Mr.Oscar Fernandes who can make a big difference here because of his very close relationship with Soniaji. He didn't do anything good for twin district despite good support from locals. This is his testing time .
3.BJP & CONG politicans get united here to bring power project. So,we can't expect anything special form MP or MLAS..

Those just looking short term and strictly from money angle will not mind to sell anything and everything against cash but not those who have owned, tilled, and grown up!!! These people will take 60k/cent and go but what about those living in surrounding locality what will be their fate w.r.t to health and environment issues!!

At Present UPCL supplies 22-25% of the State's total power requirement. Don't put another burden on coastal people.

The new power plant can be constructed near Karwar or even Hubli by constructing good road/rail lines to Karwar port. Siddappa can also consider his home district Mysore. Coal can be transported from Mangalore to Mysore.

Nothing is going to happen. There are 100 more companies to come up in our coastal region. In future also same is going to happen and no one will do nothing only people will protest and do some bench mark. done. that's it.. after a year company is celebrating its 1 year in full swing.

Raj, bro, this is not a desert like Dubai and for anything to set up even residential buildings there are very very strict guidelines on not to destroy green belt, coastal regulation, etc. just see such a huge Lavassa purely residential project near Lonavala is still to get the environment nod!! And here you are talking of a coal fired PP over 4000 acres!!!! From where will they source the water when already there is scarcity of drinking water during peak of summer!! And the pollution aspect is the worst!!! And when do you expect this place to be like Dubai (in another 500 years)!!!!

Such a huge project will have rious effect on the environment to far off places and Mangluru will literally shine in black!!!

To be noted is the powerful and deep pocketed guys know how to break the unity by use of sheer money power and once that is done it is very easy to bulldoze the remaining ones!!

Nobody can stop this project.Tell me those who oppose, when we dont have electricity we blame GOVT, when they try to establish power project they revolt. We dont have other option than going for this coal based power project,as Nuclear is dangerous in terms of safety concern. Hydro we cannot as no water falls, wind power we cannot as the place is not suitable/viable.
Ultimately here leaders will make money from the contractors who are to ute this job, as simple as that.Peopel should be educated the benefits of this project, rather harp on only negativity of this project.

That is the beauty or the opposite (ugly face) of poltics.
These same BJP guys here in this forum were praising the BJP Govt. for initiating this project and see now what those same people are shrieking now..>!!!!!

BJP is not at all a responsible Political party and their followers are also same. They are double talkers, many of them are "with the wind" - which blows in any directions and circles too.
People are complaining of power shortage. When Govt. works towards easing the situation, these sort of opposition. In every project people of the places are displaced\have to bear the brunt for the sake of progress\self sufficiency. If protests go on in every place the Govt. chooses to erect such kind of facility, then how we can have that very badly needed Electrical power.

Govt. must go ahead with the project but must find ways and means to control the contamination\pollution before hand itself so that they are in place when the project is ready and assure the people about the same.

The reason behind govt chosen NIDDODI because there are 4 main reason
    Its near to...
    1.Managlore Ship Port
    2.Mangalore Air Port
    3.Near to National Highway
    4.Near to Railway Tracks

Appreciate if Daijiworld can set up a link where readers can express their protests online from across the world. This can be later handed over to our MP's and MLA who fail to understand that Coal Power Plants need to be situated close proximity to the coal mines rather than in coastal belt. It is cheaper and economical to transport power rather than transporting the coal.

Imported coal will only increase the cost of power as seen in the past.
