Kallianpur, Jan 5: The Cynthia Fernandes Memorial Palliative Care Centre, within the campus of the Goretti Hospital in Kallianpur, was inaugurated by the late Cynthia's husband Leslie Fernandes on Thursday January 5 evening.

Leslie Fernandes, an entrepreneur based in Nassau, Bahamas, has defrayed the cost of the Rs 1-crore centre to perpetuate the memory of his departed wife, who fell victim to cancer two years ago.

Bishop Aloysius D'Souza of Mangalore earlier offered a solemn holy Eucharist at 4 pm with a host of priests concelebrating. After Leslie Fernandes inaugurated the centre, the Bishop invoked blessings over it.

A stage programme followed with the students of Mount Rosary English Medium School students presenting an invocation dance and SRA provincial superior Sr Maria Goretti welcoming the gathering.

A portrait of the late Cynthia Fernandes was unveiled to mark the inauguration of the centre. The Bishop felicitated the donor, Leslie Fernandes, on his magnanimous gesture of raising a much-needed facility in a suburban centre like Kallianpur.

Leslie Fernandes responded with sentiments as to how he was motivated by his wife's suffering so that the terminally or chronically ill might get the much-deserved solace and alleviation of pain through this centre.

Capt Anand's contribution was also lauded and recognized, besides the services of project engineers and contractors. Sr Melania proposed the vote of thanks.

The function was followed by a cultural programme and dinner.
